Vor allem auf Nebenbahnen und Schmalspurbahnen wurden früher… Triebwagen anstelle von Lokomotiven für Personen- und Güterzüge eingesetzt, weil die kleinere Antriebsleistung für das im Vergleich zu Hauptbahnen geringere Verkehrsaufkommen ausreichte und pro Zug ein Reisezugwagen eingespart werden konnte. Solche Triebwagen wurden gelegentlich als Schlepptriebwagen bezeichnet. Auf einigen Schmalspurbahnen, z. B. bei der Berninabahn, hat sich diese Betriebsart bis heute gehalten. Die ersten Dampftriebwagen wurden in Deutschland Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts im Nahverkehr eingesetzt. Bei den meisten frühen elektrischen Bahnen wurden zunächst straßenbahnartige Triebwagen verwendet, so beispielsweise bei der Volk's Electric Railway von Magnus Volk in Brighton, die den Betrieb im August 1883 aufnahm, der 1895 in Betrieb genommenen ersten deutschen elektrischen Vollbahn Meckenbeuren-Tettnang, der 1900 eröffneten Elektrischen Kleinbahn Mansfeld und der 1903 eröffneten Elektrischen Kleinbahn Alt-Rahlstedt-Volksdorf-Wohldorf bei Hamburg. Vor allem auf Nebenbahnen und Schmalspurbahnen wurden früher Trie…bwagen anstelle von Lokomotiven für Personen- und Güterzüge eingesetzt, weil die kleinere Antriebsleistung für das im Vergleich zu Hauptbahnen geringere Verkehrsaufkommen ausreichte und pro Zug ein Reisezugwagen eingespart werden konnte. Solche Triebwagen wurden gelegentlich als Schlepptriebwagen bezeichnet. Auf einigen Schmalspurbahnen, z. B. bei der Berninabahn, hat sich diese Betriebsart bis heute gehalten. Die ersten Dampftriebwagen wurden in Deutschland Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts im Nahverkehr eingesetzt.
