Dans le premier, on trouve un historique de la biographie au Québec, des aperçus sur la théorie et les formes du genre ainsi que quelques analyses de réalisations exemplaires. Tout en mentionnant, dans le survol historique, les biographies canoniques déjà abondamment recensées, les auteurs ont privilégié des oeuvres qui ouvrent à l'écriture biographique des perspectives nouvelles: celles de Fernand Ouellette, Victor-Lévy Beaulieu, Patricia Smart, ainsi que les recherches érudites de John Hare sur la biographie des Patriotes de 1837-1838. Dans le second volet de cet ouvrage, le plus original, on s'est permis, grâce à d'aimables complicités, de pénétrer par effraction dans «l'atelier du biographe» donnant accès aux secrets de Bernard Andrès, Hélène Pelletier-Baillargeon, Stéphane-Albert Boulais et François Ricard.
