Translated into English by Richard Griffiths, with a ten page Introduction by the translator, written at Selwyn College, Cambridge, November, 1960. ***The Fortune Press published many of Huysman's titles in translation, including this one. Printed at Sevenoaks by Knole Park Press Ltd. ***Near fine in scarlet cloth-covered boards, with titles in gilt to the spine. The gilt has dulled over time. The boards are bright and clean, with just a small mark on the back board. The spine has faded slightly. There is a crease to the back board also, which may have been a production fault. Spine tight. No foxing. No internal inscriptions or marks. No dustwrapper - it is unclear if the book was issued with one - perhaps there was a glassine wrapper. ***230mm x 150mm. 88 pages including a ten page Introduction by the translator to the fore, with seven pages of Notes on the Folies-Bergere to the rear. ***'"The Croquis Parisiens" are exercises in expression, and in description. The first edition was published on May 22nd 1880, with illustrations by Forain and Rafaelli. At a time of revived interest in Huysmans, it may seem strange to have chosen an early work, rather than one of the great Catholic novels which still remain inaccessible in translation. But, as I have already stated, the Croquis Parisiens are important, both in Huysmans' own development, and in the history of the prose poem. K. or J.-K. He is most famous for the novel "À rebours" (1884, published in English as "Against the Grain" and as "Against Nature"). He supported himself by way of a 30-year career in the French civil service. First considered part of Naturalism, he became associated with the decadent movement with his publication of "À rebours". His work expressed his deep pessimism, which had led him to the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. In later years, his novels reflected his study of Catholicism, religious conversion, and becoming an oblate. He discussed the iconography of Christian architecture at length in "La cathédrale" (1898), set at Chartres and with its cathedral as the focus of the book. "Là-bas" (1891), "En Route" (1895) and "La Cathédrale" (1898) are a trilogy that feature Durtal, a character on a spiritual journey who eventually converts to Catholicism. "La Cathédrale" was his most commercially successful work. Its profits enabled Huysmans to retire from his civil service job and live on his royalties.
