Aharon Appelfeld (born Ervin Appelfeld; February 16, 1932 - January 4, 2018) was an Israeli novelist and Holocaust survivor. After World War II, Appelfeld spent several months in a displaced persons camp in Italy before immigrating to Palestine in 1946, two years before Israel's independence. He was reunited with his father after finding his name on a Jewish Agency list in 1960. (He had presumed his father was dead, and his father had presumed Aharon had also perished in the Holocaust. They had both made their way separately to Israel after the war.) The father had been sent to a ma'abara (refugee camp) in Be'er Tuvia. The reunion was so emotional that Appelfeld has never been able to write about it. In Israel, Appelfeld made up for his lack of formal schooling and learned Hebrew, the language in which he began to write. His first literary efforts were short stories, but gradually he progressed to novels. He completed his studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He lived in Mevaseret Zion and taught literature at Ben Gurion University of the Negev. This story opens in an Austrian city, two generations before the Holocaust, where almost all of the Jews have converted to Christianity. The church bells are pealing today for Karl, an ambitious young civil servant whose conversion will clear his path to a coveted high government post. For Karl and his friends, most of whom have already converted, Judaism is an obstacle to their advancement that is easily discarded. The only Jews left are their impoverished relatives in the outlying Carpathian mountains and a few merchants whose shoddy stalls in the center of the town have triggered a campaign to remove them in the name of progress and civic beauty. Karl's future looks bright, but with his promotion comes a political crisis that turns his conversion into a baptism by five, unexpectedly reuniting Karl with his past and kindling a love affair that will force him to take a stand he could never have imagined. Derived from a Kirkus review: This provocative parable is the 12th novel to reach English from the internationally acclaimed author of such fiction as Badenheim 1939 (1980) and The Iron Tracks (1998). Protagonist Karl Habner is an Austrian Jew who has, with his mother's blessing, converted to Christianity in order to facilitate his advancement as a municipal official employed by the city of Neufeld. No sooner has Karl accepted congratulations at his "conversion ceremony," though, than nagging reminders of his late parents and of his religious heritage begin to shake his resolve to settle smoothly into his chosen new life. His oldest friend, an earlier convert, exemplifies embittered unfulfillment. His "scandalous" Aunt Franzi, a former cabaret singer and actress-and a forthright "proud Jew and . . . woman of principle"-dies suddenly, a visit to her provincial hometown tellingly evoking Karl's untroubled childhood. And, crucially, his memories of Gloria, the housemaid who nursed his parents during the last illness of each, compel him to seek her out. His reunion with Gloria, and his chastened gratitude for her devotion to his loved ones, unite the two and show Karl a pathway back to his origins when an injustice orchestrated by the government he serves forces him to abandon the position he had coveted and won. He and Gloria return to the Ruthenian mountains to live simply, but they cannot escape the fate to which Karl had believed himself immune. Their story's conclusion is swift, impersonal, and devastating. Its signal strength-his complex portrayal of a divided soul frustrated in its pursuit of goodness-once again confirms Appelfeld's position as matchless dramatist of the intermingled burdens and rewards of Jewry in extremis. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].

This practical field guide provides you with various strategies designed to defeat the self-limiting demons you'll encounter on the road to realizing your big goals in life. This book is all about success. It's ready and willing to help you make big things happen in your life. Your job is to connect, listen and learn from it. This book will show you how. Are you up for the challenge Discover your Creative Warrior and accelerate your progress on your exciting journey to success!.Here's a chapter from the book and here's to your success. The Epic Battle for Your Mind: Inner Critic vs. inner Creative Warrior Right now there's a major conflict taking place for control of your mind. Yes it's true. Two powerful internal forces are facing off against each other. And this confrontation is occurring just outside of your awareness. The first opponent is an adversarial character called your inner Critic (iC). It's a nasty gremlin that takes your ambition for a brighter future and smothers it before you even realize. Your iC is an insidious demon that has wedged itself between your thoughts and your actions. It's that negative voice in your head that has hood-winked you into thinking that you're not smart, talented or worthy enough. Your iC has the power to persuade you to negate your proactive impulses for personal growth. The other rival in this brawl is called your inner Creative Warrior (iCW). Fortunately, your iCW is on your side and ready to help you overcome the negativity of your iC. Your iCW has a consistently positive and uplifting message. Think of the two adversaries this way: when your iC hits your awareness with an 'I Can't'; your iCW counter-punches with an 'I Can and Will'. Your iCW is a quiet force, at first. Get to know your iCW and connect with its power. As your relationship deepens, you'll see the pessimism of your inner Critic rapidly decrease. The self-defeating impact it has on your attention will vanish and be replaced by an enhanced confidence delivered by your iCW. And soon your iC will be a distant memory. Your inner Creative Warrior is ready and willing to help you move towards your dreams and goals. Always remember that your iCW is a friend, a muse and a personal life coach. You'll soon win the battle for your mind by teaming up with the supportive strength and pervasive power of your inner Creative Warrior.Your iCW to the rescue. How to Connect With Your Creative Warrior'Awareness is the greatest agent for change.' -Eckhart Tolle Looking back at my life I can see that there were several attempts by my iCW to break through to my conscious mind. Many were successful in that they pushed me to take action. However, I wasn't aware of the source at the time. I never gave it a second thought. Or even a first thought. Here's an analogy that you may be familiar with: Your two-way radio is tuned to a random channel that you can hardly hear. There are people talking. You pick up bits and pieces of what they're saying. For years you do this. Yet, you never learn who they are or what they are actually talking about. And worst of all, you never realize your finger is touching the button that, when gently pressed, would allow you to communicate with the world. Here's how to connect with your inner Creative Warrior.Be Aware of Your Inner Critic Our iCW serves as our personal guide. It shows us the way to success by taking action towards achieving our goals. Unfortunately, its voice is drowned out by that insidious little gremlin in our head called our inner Critic. The gremlin enjoys tormenting us. Its favorite game is to try to.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | This book addresses the background and significance of the factors potentially influencing the clinical and biological outcomes of metal-on-metal hip implants. Metal-on-metal bearings were introduced and evaluated as an alternative to other bearing couples, particularly metal-on-polyethylene, due to their enhanced wear resistance as determined in laboratory testing. Initially, reports of short-term clinical outcomes were favorable and an increasing number of metal-on-metal prostheses were implanted. Subsequently, isolated case findings describing adverse tissue responses around the articulation became the harbinger of an increasing number of reports describing pseudotumors and other significant lymphocytic-based responses associated with metal-on-metal prostheses. Questions have been raised as to whether this is an implant, design, or patient-specific response. The reasons why some patients have a negative biological response and pathology while others do not remain to be determined, but tens of thousands of patients in the US, the UK, and around the world are considered to be at risk. Leading researchers and clinicians describe the issues related to the nature of the biological and pathological responses and the protocols that should be followed to determine if an adverse response is occurring. This book is essential reading for researchers, engineers, and orthopaedic surgeons who are involved in the design, evaluation, and implantation of metal-on-metal prostheses.
