De wetenschappelijke en kerkelijke theologie leven langs elkaar heen. In dit boek proberen Nederlandstalige theologen en bisschoppen deze situatie om te buigen in hernieuwde belangstelling voor elkaar. De Vaticaanse Internationale Theologische Commissie publiceerde het document Theologie vandaag, waarin de universitaire theologie de hand wordt gereikt. Het Thijmgenootschap organiseerde daarop vier bijeenkomsten voor 'mediation' en uit de gesprekken bleek dat er meer gezamenlijkheid is dan men uit de gepolariseerde theologiepraktijk had mogen verwachten.
