Rear board partially flecked, some foxing of the edges and preliminary leaves, but a very good copy. In May 1928 the polar airship 'Italia' disappeared on her return voyage from the North Pole to King's Bay. This prompted an international rescue effort, here described in some detail with excellent photo plates, which included some of the great names of artic exploration. An important book in the history of arctic aviation, recording the unduly optimistic dream of polar exploration via zeppelin.

Although the airship managed to reach the Pole, its journey back involved its crashing onto a pack of ice, resulting in the death of ten crew-men, while the other six members remained trapped.
