Añadir al carritoCondición: Good. 4^ (200 x 150 mm). [6], 173, pp. Collation: a? A-Z? Aa - Uu? Contemporary limp vellum with signs of ties, hand-written title on the slightly damaged spine and on the lower edge. Ownership entry inked out on the title page. One of the first quires partially detached. Roman and talic types. Printer's device on the title page: a crowned salamander among flames into an architectural frame, sorrounded by the latin motto Virvti sic cedit incidia. Woodcut head-piece and historiated initials. Dedication by Marcello Seripando, an author's relative, to Monsignor Marcantonio Amulio. Browned, stained and with worm tracks especially in the second half of the volume. First Edition. Girolamo Seripando's Prediche sopra il simbolo degli Apostoli, dichiarato co' simboli del concilio Niceno, e di Santo Athanasio (Venice, 1567) occupies a significant place within the religious and intellectual landscape of the mid-sixteenth century, at the intersection of Tridentine reform, Augustinian theology, and Renaissance preaching. Composed as a series of fifteen episcopal sermons delivered in Salerno and published posthumously, during a period of profound confessional tension, underlines how the Apostles' Creed can have a pedagogical framework, through which Seripando seeks to articulate the essentials of Christian belief. By reading the relatively concise and widely known Apostles' Creed through the doctrinally formulations associated with the Council of Nicaea and the Athanasian tradition, Seripando effectively constructs a hierarchy of symbols in which popular faith is progressively deepened and stabilized by conciliar authority. In doing so, he participates in what historians such as Hubert Jedin have identified as a defining feature of Catholic reform: the effort to render doctrine both precise and pastorally effective. In this sense, the sermons can be read as an attempt to integrate elements of Augustinian interiority with the doctrinal safeguards reaffirmed by the Tridentine Church. The text doesn't introduce radically new theological doctrines, but rather perform an essential work of synthesis, bringing together Augustinian spirituality, conciliar orthodoxy, and humanist rhetoric in the service of pastoral instruction.Girolamo Seripando (1493?1563) was an Augustinian friar, theologian, and later cardinal, widely regarded as one of the most intellectually significant figures at the Council of Trent. Trained within the Augustinian tradition, he combined a strong emphasis on interior spirituality with a deep commitment to ecclesiastical reform. Secretary of the general of the Order Egidio da Viterbo, he alternated his activity as a preacher with the studies of philosophy and theology , which earned him the nomination as professor of theology at the University of Bologna (1518). Created vicar general of the order, he approached the religious environment gathered around J. de Valdés, without however accepting his heterodox theses, but confirming himself more and more in the need for a profound reform of the Church. Before becoming a cardinal, Seripando served as Prior General of the Augustinian Order, where he promoted education and moral renewal among the clergy. At Trent, he played a key role in debates on justification, advancing the nuanced theory of duplex iustitia (?double justice?), which sought to reconcile the idea of an imputed righteousness with the Catholic doctrine of inherent grace. Although his position was not fully adopted, it illustrates his effort to mediate between emerging Protestant concerns and established Catholic teaching. Seripando is also often associated with the circle of Italian evangelismo, a reform-oriented current within Catholicism that emphasized personal faith, Scripture, and spiritual renewal without breaking from the Church. To face the Protestant publishing he founded the Vatican printing house, entrusting it to P. Manuzio. Many of his library and correspondence, donated to the convent of San Giovanni in Carb. Book.…
