More precisely, the crux of our work is to understand how this desire can transform and rewrite the past both in materiality - with restorations of ancient monuments - and in ideas - writing history. In this book, the main focus of attention is dedicated to three key moments, corresponding more or less to three crucial episodes in the history of the Catholic Church in the modern era. The first of these three is the Reformation and subsequent Counter-Reformation, between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Second comes the moment in which the Catholic Church lost its temporal power during the Unification of Italy and the "spiritual" reaction culminating with the First Vatican Council (1869-1870). Lastly is the period before and after the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), which can be considered the most significant reaction of Catholicism towards modernity. If there is one constant in the history of Christianity and especially of the Western Church, it is its deep desire to be connected with its own past. Il suo ingresso principale è costituito da un ampio nartece, cara…tterizzato dalla presenza di opere straordinarie, quali l'antica porta lignea, la decorazione a imitazione del marmo di V secolo e l'imago altomedievale della Theotokos. Il nartece, per anni trascurato negli studi, doveva essere, in origine, uno degli ambienti di maggior fasto e importanza dell'intero edificio e, soprattutto, non un semplice spazio a servizio delle opere ma il luogo per cui queste erano state pensate. Destinato con ogni probabilità principalmente ai catecumeni e ai penitenti, doveva connotarsi come una vera e propria zona liminare, mondo tra i mondi, zona di transito fisico e spirituale. Il presente volume intende indagare questo luogo a tutto tondo, con un'attenzione particolare alla sua storiografia, all'archeologia del monumento e alle sue decorazioni, rivelandone la facies tardoantica straordinariamente conservata nella sostanza. Si vuole proporre al lettore uno sguardo sinergico, volto a mostrare come la coesistenza dei diversi media permetta una più esaustiva comprensione dello scenario artistico tardoantico.

Sono trascorsi da allora otto secoli di intensa storia spirituale e umana. Il volume intende celebrare questo importante evento delineando le vicende storico-artistiche del convento di Santa Sabina all'Aventino - prima sede dei Domenicani a Roma e oggi Curia Generalizia dell'Ordine - attraverso una metodologia che metta a confronto lo studio archeologico del monumento architettonico, la documentazione archivistica e le fonti testuali e iconografiche. Nel contempo si presenta per la prima volta l'interessante quanto eterogeneo patrimonio di opere d'arte custodito nel complesso, ricco di materiali significativi quanto spesso poco noti, se non addirittura inediti.
