Hardcover boards. Condición: Book in Fine condition. First Edition, First Printing. Compiled by photographer Patti Perret in 1984 through BlueJay Press as a photo-essay collection of 100 modern fantasy authors, with each author given a 2 page spread for a personally penned essay and a photo taken by Perret. First Edition, First Printing (with complete number line), signed by 14 of the writers. In collectible condition with seemingly no signs of wear to either the complete dust jacket (save for a touch of shelf wear to the head of the DJ) or the book itself. Even the cream-colored hardcover boards appear new and without any smudging or discoloration; a feat for a book this many decades old and handled by so many hands for signatures. The only "flaws" would be the signature impressions that transferred through the pages from some of the heavier-handed signatories and most notably with Jack Williamson's signature, whose signature has stained the page opposite his portrait, however the transfer does not impair the reading of his essay contribution. Signed by: Joyce Carol Oates (p. 35), Charles de Lint (p. 92), George R. R. Martin (p. 106), Peter David (p. 111), Neil Gaiman (p. 131), Elizabeth Moon (p. 134), Suzy McKee Charnas (p. 164, whose fans include director Guillermo del Toro, and whose interesting publishing history includes the controversial title "Motherlines"), Jack Williamson (p. 180, nicknamed one of the Deans of Science Fiction and rumored to be one of the first sci fi writers to use the terms "terraforming," "psionics," and "genetic engineering"), Fred Saberhagen (p. 188, who made Dracula himself the protagonist in his vampire series), Tracy Hickman (p. 197, of "Dragon Lance" fame), Diana Paxton (p. 205, also known as Countess Diana Listmaker and founder of the Society of Creative Anachronism), Katherine Kurtz (p. 214), Barbara Hambly (p. 225), Dennis L. McKiernan (p. 226, who intended to write a sequel to J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings"). The book opens with an introduction written by writer Terri Windling (of Bumblehill Press and Mythic Imagination Institute), who explores the historical evolution of myth, archetypes and fantasy story telling, from "Gilgamesh" to modern times, and what treasured fantasy stories transmit to society at large through the ages. This edition was released by BlueJay Books, a small specialty publishing house the operated for a brief period in the mid 80s and competed against larger, traditional distributors. BlueJay Books ceased printing operations in 1986, but published many titles, including Dan Simmons' first novel, "The Song of Kali" in 1995, Greg Bear's "Eon" in 1985, along with works by Andre Norton (the first woman to be awarded the position of Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy, among many other awards), and Hugo winners Connie Willis, Vernor Vinge and Frederik Pohl. It is rumored that many of the names in this collection are absolutely wild about cats. Complete dust jacket in Fine condition.…

Añadir al carritoSecond edition, expanded with new appendices and a preface. First published in 1881, this valuable account of Matabeleland and its flora and fauna is attractively illustrated from sketches and watercolour drawings by the author and his brother, William. This copy is from the libraries first of William and then later Robert Washington Oates, Frank's nephew. Frank Oates (1840-1875), accompanied by William (1841-1896), sailed from Southampton to Natal on 5 March 1873, hoping to see the Zambezi and explore countries to the north to study geography and zoology. The brothers fitted out their expedition in Maritzburg and travelled through Transvaal and Bechuanaland, visiting the Tati district. William returned to England and Frank continued, spending some time "in the Matabele (Ndebele) country north of the Limpopo River. Three attempts to proceed were frustrated by the weather and the opposition of the local people" (ODNB). Finally he arrived on the banks of the Zambezi December and made large collections of natural history specimens. Sadly, Oates contracted a fever and died shortly thereafter, just 80 miles north of the Tati River. The doctor and naturalist Benjamin Bradshaw attended to him and saw to the safety of his letters and field notes, later edited by his brother, Charles. The new appendices are on ethnology, ornithology, herpetology, entomology, and botany, with the accompanying natural history plates lithographed by J. G. Keulemans and R. Mintern. The Ibis, a quarterly journal of ornithology, lauded: "The collection was formed with the greatest care, and it is seldom that it falls to the lot of the naturalist to examine a series of birds in which the particulars of capture are so carefully noted on each specimen as in the present instance. For this reason alone, therefore, the collection is of great importance; but, besides this, it represents, without doubt, a very fair idea of the avifauna of the parts of the Transvaal and Matabele countries" (p. 170). Provenance: bookplates of William and Robert (1874-1958) on the front endpapers; the bookplate of Frank Oates posthumously pasted on the front flyleaf and an in memoriam bookplate on the half-title. Robert served in the First World War, later becoming an antique dealer and antiquarian bookseller. He established the Oates Memorial Museum and Library, commemorating his uncle Frank and his cousin Lawrence "Titus" Oates, who tragically perished at a young age during the "Terra Nova" expedition. Czech, p. 210; Mendelssohn II, p.112; Troelstra, p. 321. The Ibis, vol. IV, 1882. Octavo. Stipple-engraved frontispiece of Oates on india paper, 6 chromolithographed plates, 14 lithographed natural history plates, all but one coloured, 2 wood-engraved plates and illustrations in the text, 4 folding maps ("Map of South Eastern Africa" bound at end with original wash colour); 2 additional illustrations of Oates's graves in England and Botswana pasted on p. 274; 8 pp. advertisements at end. Original moderate yellow-green cloth, lettered and decorated in brown and gilt, green surface-paper endpapers, edges uncut. Lower rear corner bumped, spine lightly rolled, very minor foxing to endpapers. An excellent copy.…
