Wallach Art Gallery, Columbia University, New York: 15 September - 21 November 1998] ; "The reputation of William Hogarth (1697-1764) rests largely on his pictorial stories, a series of engravings that he called "modern Moral Subjects," the most famous being the Harlot's and the Rake's Progress. In this catalog, David Bindman works backward from Hogarth's reputation today--where he is seen by some as a conservative populist and by others as a political radical--and examines his impact on various artists over the past three centuries. Bindman also sets Hogarth's prints firmly in their historical context, discussing the artist's public and the different influences on his work, from Roman satire to the politics of the day. The result is an engaging and insightful portrayal not only of William Hogarth, but also of the middle years of the eighteenth century. Art lovers will enjoy this book, but so too will anyone with an interest in the literature and history of the mid-eighteenth century. " ; FINE. Book. …

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the fascinating world of Latin homonyms, words that share the same form but have distinct meanings. The author delves into the nuances of Latin grammar and provides a comprehensive alphabetical list of homonyms, meticulously citing their usage across the works of renowned Latin authors, such as Caesar, Cicero, and Virgil. The book examines the complexities of homonyms within the context of Latin's intricate inflectional system. It goes beyond simple homonyms, examining words that derive from the same stem but belong to different parts of speech, as well as homonyms formed by different roots entirely. The author also highlights the historical development of homonyms within the Latin language and provides insightful comparisons to how they arise in English and other modern languages. This exploration of Latin homonyms is not merely a linguistic exercise, but a journey into the heart of Latin literature. The book reveals the ways in which homonyms contribute to ambiguity, nuance, and even poetic beauty in the works of some of the greatest Latin authors. The author's meticulously researched list of homonyms, combined with his astute analysis of their usage, provides a unique and valuable resource for any student or enthusiast of Latin literature.
