Sessa's cat-and-mouse printer's device appears on the same leaf.,The text is illustrated with 77 woodcut diagrams. A very fine copy, crisp and bright. There is a very light stain on the title page, a bit of soiling in the gutter of leaf A3, and a discreet paper repair to the fore-edge of the final leaf. "The 'Perspectiva communis' was the most widely used of all optical texts from the early fourteenth until the close of the sixteenth century, and it remains today the best index of what was known to the scientific community in general on the subject" (DSB). It was first printed in Milan around 1482, then, in 1503, it was included in a collection by Thomas Bradwardine, "Praeclarissimum mathematicarum opus"(Valencia). This 1504 edition, the first edited by Luca Gaurico, can be considered the third, although another edition of the pre-Gaurico version was also published in 1504, at Leipzig. A mathematician from Naples and teacher of Scaliger, Gaurico, who also edited the works of Archimedes and Ptolemy, completely revised the text. "The work on which Pecham's fame has chiefly rested is the Perspectiva communis, probably written between 1277 and 1279 during Pecham's professorship at the papal curia. In the first book Pecham discussed the propagation of light and color, the anatomy and, physiology of the eye, the act of visual perception, physical requirements for vision, the psychology of vision, and the errors of direct vision. In book II he discussed vision by reflected rays and presented a careful and sophisticated analysis of image formation by reflection. Book III was devoted to the phenomena of refraction, the rainbow, and the Milky Way. "The central feature of Pecham's optical system and the dominant theme of book I of the 'Perspectiva communis' is the theory of direct vision. Here, as elsewhere, Pecham endeavored to reconcile all the available authorities-Aristotle, Euclid, Augustine, al-Kindi, Ibn al-Haytham, Ibn Rushd, Grosseteste, and Bacon. Following Ibn al-Haytham, Pecham argued that the emission of visual rays from the observer's eye is neither necessary nor sufficient as an explanation of sight; the primary agent of sight is therefore the ray coming to the eye from a point on the visible object. But in an attempt to follow Aristotle, al-Kindi, and Grosseteste as well, Pecham argued that visual rays do nevertheless exist and perform the important, but not always necessary, function of moderating the luminous rays from the visible object and making them, "commensurate with the visual power." Thus Pecham, like Bacon, resolved the age-old debate between the emission and intromission theories of vision in favor of a twofold radiation, although, to be sure, priority was given to rays issuing from the visible object. "The rays issuing from points on the visible object fall perpendicularly onto the cornea and penetrate without refraction to the sensitive ocular organ, the glacial humor (or crystalline lens); nonperpendicular rays are weakened by refraction and therefore can be largely ignored. Since only one perpendicular ray issues from each point of the visible object and the collection of such perpendicular rays maintains a fixed order between the object and the eye, a one-to-one correspondence is established between points on the object and points on the glacial humor, and unconfused perception of the visual field is thus achieved. Vision is not "completed," however, in the glacial humor. There is a further propagation of the rays (or species) through the vitreous humor and optic nerve to the common nerve, where species from the two eyes combine, and eventually to the anterior part of the brain and the "place of interior judgment." This work contains Archimedes' mathematical treatises Quadratura circuli and Quadratura parabolae, in the Latin translation of William of Moerbeke, which accompanied similar works on the quadrature of the circle by Campano da Novara and Boethius. In Quadratura circuli, Archimedes 'calculated the ratio of circumference to diameter (not called p until early modern times) as being less than 3-1/7 and greater than 3-10/71. In the course of this proof Archimedes showed that he had an accurate measurement of approximating the roots of large numbers' (DSBI, p.222). Quadratura parabola proved that the area enclosed by a straight line and a parabola is equal to 4/3 the area of a triangle with equal height and base. 'Archimedes demonstrated the quadrature of the parabola by purely geometric methods. In the first part of the tract he demonstrated the same thing by means of a balancing method. By the use of the law of the lever and a knowledge of the centers of gravity of triangles and trapezia, coupled with a reductio procedure, the quadrature is demonstrated' (ibid., p.219). Tetragonismus represents the earliest appearance of any work by Archimedes in Latin, predated only by excerpts in Valla's Deexpetendis et fugiendis rebus opus (Venice, 1501). The first printing of Archimedes in Greek was not until 1544, accompanied by Regiomontanus's version of the Latin text. These publications, along with Tartaglia's reprint of these two Archimedean texts in 1543, facilitated the use of Archimedes by Galileo, Torricelli, and Kepler. Attractive copy of the first edition of Gaurico's ephemerides. Books of this kind had wide circulation, but complete copies are rare and sought after. This one, with interesting contemporary annotations and loosely inserted papers of an early owner, is an outstanding witness of the 16 th century's great interest and expertise in astrology. Luca Gaurico (1475-1558) was the astrological consultant of Caterina de' Medici and "one of the greatest astrologers of all time" (Cantamessa). Born to a to a poor family of Gauro (Kingdom of Naples), Gaurico taught at the Universities of Bologna and Ferrara. He was exiled and tortured by the ruler of Bologna, Giovanni II Bentivoglio, dissatisfied with the astrologer's prophecies about his destiny. Gaurico predicted the papacy of Alessandro Farnese, Pope Paul III, who welcomed him in Rome as his personal astrologer and made him "table companion", knight and later bishop. 'Ephemerides recognitae' contains the ephemerides for the years 1534-1551. These are detailed tables listing the predicted positions of stars and planets at regular intervals of date and time in the future, as well as the occurrence of eclipses. The numerical data was used by astrologers to compile birth charts (like the one sketched in ink on a loosely inserted piece of paper) and formulate predictions. Similar tables were also used by navigators to determine their position using celestial bodies or stars. An initial section contains preliminary notions of astronomy and mathematics, including tables of longitude and latitude of various cities, two large diagrams of the winds and more horoscope examples. At the half of the 16th century, this volume belonged to "Francesco Benci and his friends". From the contemporary manuscript notes, it appears that these included high-profile individuals from Perugia, Foligno and Camerino (Umbria, Italy). He can be identified with the Florentine Francesco Benci, treasurer of Perugia in 1542. Benci himself, and possibly some of his friends, used the ephemeris tables in this volume as if they were calendars, annotating all sorts of important events in the blank margins. These include religious festivities, the conclave in 1549, the birth of the twins of Margaret of Parma and Ottavio Farnese (dukes of Camerino) in 1545, a meeting between Pope Paul III and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1543.
