In this masterful first book of original poems, Iain Galbraith explores how people's actions and experiences shape not only their own lives but the world around them. His poems are full of sharp observations and a level of detail which ground the reader in whichever world he presents, and while the settings vary from the mundane to the epic the language never fails to retain a sense of the fantastical. Through his words Galbraith is able to to take us on an emotional journey through love, grief, hope and discontent. After years of experience writing and translating poetry, The True Height of the Ear acts as evidence of Galbraith's comfort in writing in a variety of different styles, creating a book of poems which consistently entice his readers.

Self-Portrait with a Swarm of Bees combines the poet's unerring instinct for the surprising perspective on commonplace objects or events with a mischievous delight in the detail of the absurd. Wagner is a vigilant, yet playful, chronicler of the quotidian, his meticulous handling of image and sound forging a worldly, almost luminous palpability.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Many of the poets who spring to mind when we think of German poetry in English translation are Austrians - at least 'by formation' (as the late Dame Muriel Spark spoke of her Scottishness). Mostly born in the post-war Second Republic, during the politically riven First Republic subsumed in 1938 into Nazi Greater Germany, or into the richly traditional, multi-cultural Austro-Hungarian Empire, dismembered in 1918, Rainer Maria Rilke, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Georg Trakl, Paul Celan, Rose Auslander, Ingeborg Bachmann, Erich Fried, Ilse Aichinger, Ernst Jandl, Friederike Mayrocker, Raoul Schrott and Evelyn Schlag are poets whose names many readers of modern poetry will recognize. The present anthology collects work by several of these, placing them - in new translations by Scottish poets - in one of the contexts in which it makes sense to read them: in the company of some of their Austrian contemporaries, all of whom deserve to be far better known in English than they are. Every poem seeks its own, often volatile space, and categories like 'British', 'Scottish' or 'Austrian' are too narrow to frame the imaginative reach of a single authentic poem. But when Franz-Josef Murau, hero of Thomas Bernhard's novel "Die Ausloschung (Extinction)", expresses his love for Ingeborg Bachmann's great poem "Bohmen liegt am Meer" (which opens this collection), he calls it "so Austrian, but at the same time so permeated by the whole world, and by the world surrounding this world". Something similar might be said of each of poems in this compact and vital selection. This is the latest addition to the "European Originals" series which has previously showcased Scottish, Finnish and Hungarian poetry.

Self-Portrait with a Swarm of Bees, to be published in Arc's flagship translation series 'Visible Poets', combines the poet's unerring instinct for the surprising perspective on commonplace objects or events - plants, animals, landscapes- with a mischievous delight in the detail of the absurd, the precarious balance. Wagner is a vigilant, yet playful, chronicler of the quotidian, his meticulous handling of image and sound forging a worldly, almost luminous palpability. Intensely curious, constantly attentive to novel or unanticipated possibilities afforded by traditional forms, Wagner's poems celebrate what he has called 'our steaming, glowing, odorous, noisy world'. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This anthology brings together the work of nineteen poets from a dozen different countries, with translations from at least seven languages, to provide a rich mix of contemporary voices. Here you can move from the Australian desert to an English coal mine, from the interior world of Grace Darling to the mythic world of the Ramayana, from earthquakes in New Zealand to gardens in France. A common thread is migration, in many senses; another is the beguilements and betrayals of memory. The poets' own reflections on their writing provide insight into the cultural and personal contexts of work that expands the vocabulary of poetry in English. The Oxford Poets Anthology 2013 includes: Gregor Addison David Attwooll Emily Ballou Paul Batchelor Christy Ducker Lynn Jenner Riina Katajavuori David Krump Frances Leviston Peter Mackay Adam Nadasdy Andre Naffis-Sahely Vivek Narayanan Leonie Rushforth Kerrin P. Sharpe Ian Stephen Toh Hsien Min Jan Wagner Karen McCarthy Woolf This seventh anthology in the series includes nineteen poets, new writers and some more widely known.
