Im Anschluß an Hamann, Herder und Rousseau, besonders aber an Vico, begreift Jochmann den Verfall der früheren Hochformen der Dichtkunst als das entwicklungsgeschichtlich notwendige Resultat des zivilisatorischen Fortschritts, als Folge der Emanzipation der Phantasie zur wissenschaftlichen Vernunft. Darin liegt für Jochmann jedoch keine Aufforderung zur Preisgabe der Kunst, sondern zur Anerkenntnis des geschichtlichen Wandels, dem Formen und Aufgaben der Kunst unterliegen.
