Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 405 pages. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. The Jesus Incident is a 1079 science fiction novel co-written by Dune author Frank Herbert and poet Bill Ransom. Originally published in May 1979, it serves as a sequel to Herbert's 1965 novel Destination: Void and marks the first entry in the Pandora Sequence trilogy. The story picks up thousands of years after the events of Destination: Void. The conscious artificial intelligence created by humans, now known simply as Ship, has achieved godlike omnipotence. Ship transports the remaining multi-cultural human crew to a hostile, poisonous planet called Pandora. Pandora is an incredibly deadly world inhabited by lethal native fauna—such as nerve-runners and airborne jellyfish—alongside a massive, sentient ocean kelp. Ship demands that humanity discover how to achieve "WorShip" (true, meaningful communication and respect) or face total extinction. To push this experiment along, Ship awakens Raja Lon Flattery, a chaplain-psychiatrist from hibernation, to witness and guide humanity's struggle against both the planet and their own destructive nature. Meanwhile, human leaders and scientists split into factions, abusing cloning technologies and attempting to wage war against the planet's ecology. Condition: Inscription from the author to Tom Loock on title, some very light age toning, front heal corner bumped. Jacket with light edge wear else very good in a near fine jacket. Octavo (9 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's quarter black cloth with gilt lettering to spine over grey boards in original pictorial jacket. The jacket is designed by Brad Holland. In God Emperor of Dune, Frank Herbert analyzes the cyclical patterns of human society, as well as humanity's evolutionary drives. Using his ancestral memories, Leto II has knowledge of the entirety of human history and is able to recall the effects and patterns of tyrannical institutions, from the Babylonian empire through the Jesuits on ancient Earth, and thus builds an empire existing as a complete nexus encompassing all these methods. This galactic empire differs from the historical tyrants in that it is deliberately designed to end in destruction, and is only instituted in the first place as part of a plan to rescue humanity from an absolute destruction which Leto II has foreseen through his oracular visions. Leto II personally explores the emergent effects of civilization, noting that most hierarchical structures are remnants of evolutionary urges toward safety. Thus, by forming a perfectly safe and stable empire, Leto II delivers a message to be felt throughout history. Condition:: Signed and inscribed "For Jodi" on the title page by Frank Herbert. Back head corners gently bumped, a few spots to rear endpapers, bookplate to front pastedown, a bit of soiling to edges. This collection includes the three oversized format issues of Analog Magazine that make up Dune World (Dec. 1963, Jan 1964 & Feb 1964) , the five issues of Analog that make up The Prophet of Dune (three in the oversized format, two in the more recognizable smaller than trade sized format ( Jan 1965 - May 1965) ) , the five issues of Galaxy Magazine that make up Dune Messiah (July 1969- Nov. 1969) , and the first mass market paperback of Dune (Ace, N-3 with a price of .95 cents). Most issues are in Very Good+ (or better) condition. There is a smallish spot of discoloration to the front cover of Analog Dec. 1963, a crease to the front cover (done during publication) to the Feb 1964 issue, a small tear to the bottom front spine joint and bit of a bump / crease to the top spine end of the sept 1969 issue, and some light bumping and rubbing to the spine ends of the mass market paperback Dune. "Herbert began researching Dune in 1959. He was able to devote himself wholeheartedly to his writing career because his wife returned to work full-time as an advertising writer for department stores, becoming their breadwinner during the 1960s. The novel Dune was published in 1965, which spearheaded the Dune franchise. He later told Willis E. McNelly that the novel originated when he was assigned to write a magazine article about sand dunes in the Oregon Dunes near Florence, Oregon. He got overinvolved and ended up with far more raw material than needed for an article; while the article was never written, it planted in Herbert the seed that would become Dune. Dune took six years of research and writing to complete, and was much longer than other commercial science fiction of the time. Herbert's environmental work in Oregon formed the basis of the speculative ecological work of the Fremen, which parallels real-world efforts and tactics of sand dune management.
