To let you know what it is about, it's probably best to simply supply the full title, which is one of those things from the old days that can fill up a whole page: "A Photograph o…f Our Old Life: Sparks from the Camp Fire, or Tales of the Old Veterans. Thrilling Stories of Heroic Deeds, Brave Encounters, Desperate Battles, Bold Achievements, Reckless Daring, Lofty Patriotism, Terrible Suffering and Wondrous Fortitude. As Re-Told To-Day Around the Modern Camp Fire. New and Revised Edition with Contributions from One Hundred and Fifty Comrades. Edited by Joseph W. Morton, Jr. Illustrated." If only Mr. Morton had mentioned that these tales were of the American Civil War, and the comrades and veterans were from the Union Army! Oh, and that he was using the work "photograph" euphemistically, though the book is absolutely loaded with illustrationsenough for a list of them to fill up seven pages, including maps and a number of full-color plates. There is also a pull-out reproduction of a Richmond merchant's ledger page listing the purchases of numerous Confederate officers, as well as Jefferson Davis himself. The text is arranged in a rather idiosyncratic way. One would think the stories would be told in chronological order, but no: It all starts off with a recounting of the battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Then he goes on to the first, naval, battle of Memphis in 1862. There are many stories about prison life, something about the death of John Wilkes Booth in 1865, then a half dozen stories about the Battle of Antietam in 1862and so it goes. (If you just go with the flow and don't ask too many questions like who is actually telling the stories narrated in the first person, you'll be alright.) It all ends with a history of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans' organization that was a potent political force by the time this copy of "Sparks from the Camp Fire" was published in 1891. An engaging full-page gift inscription is on the second front free endpaper. With obvious care taken with her penmanship and content, Mary E. Kershner wrote the inscription and gave this copy to her husband, Franklin H. Kershner, originally a member of the Pennsylvania Vol. Cavalry. At the time his birthday in 1892, he was a member of the General Doubleday Post of the G.A.R. She also cites her four brothers in the inscription, all of whom served in the Union Army as well. She says they are all deceased at the time of writing, but doesn't say whether they died in the war or in the 40+ years since. This lovely inscription is what makes this particular copy so special. We have listed this copy as being in "Good" condition, taking its age into account. That inscription page has come loose from its binding and has been laid in at its proper place. Two newspaper clippings are also laid in at the front, one a nostalgic poem about veterans getting a raw deal from politicians, the other an anecdote about prominent politician James G. Blaine. The title and copyright for the book says it is a "new and revised edition" and was published in 1891; however, the earliest copy we can find came out in 1890 and it also says it is a "new and revised edition." The most prominent flaw with this copy is the way the boards, particularly the front board, are separating from the text block. The front cover is quite loose and fragile but it is still holding on; the back cover is a bit tighter. The text block itself is still quite square and tight, with no loose or missing pages, except for the two front free end papersthe first is quite loose, and the second, which has come off altogether, contains that aforementioned inscription, and has been laid in. The binding is in brown cloth. It shows the expected amount of bumping and wear of a book its age, particularly around the spine. There is an elaborate stamped illustration on the front cover.
