Collected and Curated introduces Chinese art and material culture through the items from the permanent collection of The University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG), The University of Hong Kong. As the oldest continuously operating museum in Hong Kong, UMAG serves as a significant venue for contemporary art exhibitions, and excels at collecting, documenting and teaching about local and regional artists and art forms, while fostering ongoing and new relationships. Regarded as an essential teaching resource, UMAG has expanded its collection and programming through generous donations from patrons and artists, along with support from the University of Hong Kong and the HKU Museum Society. Since 1953, curators and educators have leveraged this assistance to expand, display and teach with a collection that highlights artefacts ranging from Neolithic cultures (ca. 6500 BCE-ca. 1900 BCE) to the early kingdoms and dynasties of imperial China (ca. 1500 BCE-1911). UMAG has also gained a reputation for its fine selection of works by artists-predominantly painters-of the 20th and early 21st century. The museum's mission is to provide artistic and cultural experiences that are accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, fostering a greater appreciation for the arts and nurturing a strong sense of cultural values and belonging within our diverse community. In so doing, UMAG preserves and teaches both the past and present, serving as a platform for ongoing discussions about the meaning of art and its significant role in contemporary society.

This catalogue is published to coincide with the UMAG exhibition Ying Tianqi What Remains in Ruins, an exhibition featuring mixed-media work printed with water-soluble ink on paper, oils, a video projection and installation. Juxtaposed here for the first time are the renowned Chinese artist's series--Traces of Centuries and Xidi Village--which present his reflections on the dismantling versus the preservation of historic places, with a focus on the ancient city of Wuhu and Xidi Village in Anhui province. A section of the exhibition examines the visual modes of ruins in an attempt to preserve the memory of deconstructed sites, along with the related physical and cultural heritage. Ying Tianqi was born in 1949 in Wuhu, a city located in southeastern Anhui province. The public presentation of these artworks translates the artist's nostalgia for and contemplation of two unique and emotionally charged ancient sites in Anhui province that are celebrated for their historic architecture. Within his visual language, images of ruins are embedded in abstract or geometric forms with textural surfaces and colours that inspire associations with architectural frames and fragments, as well as traces of bricks and tiles from Anhui's architectural heritage. Both an artist and activist, Ying Tianqi continues to be socially engaged in the process of heritage preservation and the reconstruction of the ancient city of Wuhu. In 2014, his heritage proposal to the government was centred around the concept of 'Remains--Rebirth'. As part of this initiative, he mobilised thousands of villagers to retrieve bricks in order to rebuild his home town; through this action he directly questioned the widely accepted practice of re-building rather than conserving and restoring built environments. The UMAG exhibition visually and critically contemplates decay and reconstruction, bridging the past and the future. This publication accompanies an unprecedented exhibition highlighting four of the magnificent chinoiserie tapestries of Chinese Emperor Qianlong, woven after designs by François Boucher at the famous Beauvais manufactory from 1758-1760. The large and well-preserved textiles form part of the royal French commission by King Louis XV, objects of which were presented to Qianlong in 1766. These celebrated tapestries are joined by another historic set of culturally related depictions in print--The Battles of the Emperor of China. The engravings were ordered by Qianlong, drawn by Jesuit painters at the Imperial Court in Beijing and then printed in Paris 1769-1774. The 'culture' of these prints follows King Louis XIV's influential images of the Histoire du Roi and presents Qianlong as both a war hero and as the undisputed leader of China in the mid-eighteenth century. These depictions date to the exact same time period, one that coincides with the high demand for chinoiserie in France--culminating in the world-famous designs by Boucher--and the Imperial Court of China's interest in French design and culture. Despite their world-renowned fame, these groups of images previously have not been shown together. Imagining Qianlong presents one of the rare topics to celebrate the court cultures in both France and China, at a time when the empires idolized each other, and cultural influences and exchanges were highly significant and supported by well-established and prosperous monarchs during an increasingly enlightened eighteenth century. In order to highlight the cross-cultural aspects of this project, Florian Knothe (HKU), Pascal-François Bertrand (Bordeaux), Nicholas Pearce (Glasgow) and Kristel Smentek (MIT) have contributed essays detailing the sociocultural history of the tapestries and prints. Each scholar is an expert in their fields and a well-versed lecturer on Chinese artistic influences in France, as well as French and European Jesuit culture in China.

This publication, and the accompanying exhibition, presents the vital contributions of two of Japan's most remarkable artists, Kurosaki Akira and Nakabayashi Tadayoshi, who participated in and influenced the twentieth-century renaissance of printmaking in Japan. This cultural phenomenon grew as the artists underwent rigorous training while maintaining a robust interest in traditional printing methods, such as the world-renowned woodblock technique. Coupled with their innovative experimentation, the two printers spearheaded a revival that expanded upon established printing techniques. The unusual juxtaposition of two contemporary artists emphasises both Kurosaki and Nakabayashi's masterpieces and their individual contributions to the ongoing development of Japanese printmaking. This pairing also highlights the distinctiveness, cultural relevance and novelty of their work. Both born in 1937 and similarly trained, Kurosaki and Nakabayashi pursued different topics and employed distinctive colour palettes. Despite these differences, they both excelled at abstract artmaking and are celebrated for their masterful storytelling. While this resurgence of creative printmaking was propelled by technical invention and newly emerging abstract styles, its themes engaged with the rapid transformations of post-war Japan. The era saw a trend toward self-expression and ushered in an unprecedented age of experimentation and innovation in the arts.Following the publication and display of Noda Tetsuya s work in 2022, this complementary project benefitted again from Steven Co s generous support and knowledge, as well as from Noda s informative text that makes this volume a crucial reference work that situates Kurosaki and Nakabayashi in their respective time and place. This publication and exhibition showcase Japanese printmakers Kurosaki Akira and Nakabayashi Tadayoshi. Both artists, born in 1937, revitalized traditional woodblock techniques and brought innovation to the art form. Their work reflects post-war Japan's changes.
