We are still witnessing the consequences of the myopic and misguided policies that were pursued by UN officials and western leaders at the time. This paper elucidates the story of how Lumumba was first betrayed and then murdered. It analyses how historians and political scientists have treated the conflict and suggests ways in which scholars from the two disciplines can cooperate better and learn from one another. The paper reverts to international relations theories that adequately explain what happened between 1960 and 1964.This essay critically examines why UN intervention in the Congo failed to achieve the intended peace that constituted the rationale behind its intervention. The essay will argue that perceptions and misperceptions among UN members exacerbated a rift between the UN and the realities of the conflict. And the Cold War ideology at the time and Belgium's support for Moise Tshombe to secede Katanga because of their hatred for Patrice Lumumba, greatly hampered UN mission as a peace machinery.…

From the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, the history of the Palestinians and the Israelis is defined by perpetual conflict with one another. Israelis and Palestinians are entangled with each other and alienated from one another in almost every imaginable way. From 1948 to 1973, Arabs and Israelis engaged in four great wars with heavy casualties on both sides. The United States of America has deployed enormous resources as peace broker in this conflict partly because of its special relationship to Israel and partly because of its economic and strategic interests in the Middle East. Successive American administrations have maintained the tradition of mediation, but the most genuine commitment was made by the Clinton administration, culminating in the signing of the Wye River Memorandum in 1998. This mediation effort notwithstanding, peace between the Israelis and Palestinians is still an imaginary luxury and violence remains the order of the day between the two peoples. The aim of this review paper is to analyze the lack of bold leadership on the part of the United States of America in brokering a lasting peace deal between Isrealis and Palestinians. This paper is divided into three parts and the first part retraces the history of the conflict from the creation of the state of Israel in 1948 to the Yom Kippur war of 1973. Academics and think-tanks continue to search for solutions to Africa's longstanding problems. Studies have proven that the entire region is essentially confronted with a crisis of social structures and government and the fragmentation of authority is the hallmark of this crisis (Van Hoyweghen & Smis, 2002:575). Over twenty-four million people are infected with AIDS/HIV, growth of per capita income is low and civil wars have killed millions in Rwanda, Burundi, Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo. African governments owe billions of dollars in debt (Polanyi, 2003:563). This irreversible trend brought the good governance discourse in development cooperation between the donors and African counterparts.The purpose of this paper is to examine how the concept of good governance is being implemented in Africa. For clarity purposes, the work is limited to the analysis of the efforts being made by the European Union (EU) and the World Bank in assisting African countries to implement good governance. This choice is based on the fact that the EU and World Bank are the main multilateral aid donors and development partners of the region. It argues that good governance enhances transparency in the use of development aid, helps to reduce poverty and spurs development, and that it is necessary to foster institutional reforms (causative argument). The paper further argues that implementing good governance will improve the use of political power by leaders and help in the consolidation of peace (normative argument).Achieving global governance is a main issue in international politics today. Enforcing good governance is a must if Africa has to be fully integrated into the process of globalisation. And for globalisation to be complete and meaningful, poverty in Africa as well as other parts of the world must be eradicated. No amount of foreign aid can lead to meaningful development without effective governance. The poor state of development in Africa produces a backlash that has a global reach. Europe for example is facing a huge influx of migrants from Africa in search for greener pastures. Eradicating poverty is therefore a global challenge as the world becomes smaller. The fight against poverty and underdevelopment has given rise to a greater inter-state relationship in which powerful institutions play a decisive role.…
