The book has rubbing at corners and edges, generally clean covers, bump to top edge front cover, cover corners slightly turned in, solid binding, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing. Account of the Ziegler Polar Expedition 1903-05 led by Fiala. Party lost ship at Rudolf Island, northern tip of Franz Joseph Archipelago. Three attempts were made to reach the N Pole using both ponies & dogs to 82 N. At one point Fiala & his companion fell into a deep crevasse and were fortunately within reach of the rescuers' rope. The expedition is also noteworthy for the superb paintings and sketches made by member, Russell Williams Porter, who later became a distinguished inventor of telescopes and telescope design blueprints. The book measures 261mm tall x 175mm, and has 411 pages, 95 b/w photos + 3 illustrations, 2 color folding maps, index. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.
