Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Sidney has functioned as the extended hand and eyes of many of the best artists of the second half of the twentieth century- it is an overwhelming line-up. I prefer to think of Sidney as a muse rather than a producer; the assimilation of his aura a stimulant to the process. - Richard SerraBeginning in 1972, Richard Serra has made over 320 print editions at the Los Angeles artists' workshop and fine-art publisher Gemini G.E.L.-more than any other artist. Gemini co-founder Sidney B. Felsen has had the good fortune and privilege of witnessing the birth of each and every of these editions, camera in hand. Early on, Felsen realized there was an intrusive element to photographing someone engaged in the private, meditative moments of making art, and his ally became the close friendships with artists he developed throughout the decades, along with his subtle manner: "Taking photographs," says Serra, "is Sidney's way of watching over not watching us." Although sculpture is the most public aspect of Serra's practice, drawing and printmaking play crucial roles, both as independent pieces and in working towards sculpture. Richard Serra at Gemini presents a selection from nearly 3,000 photos by Felsen, revealing ways in which Serra has remade the conventions of printmaking, and celebrating 50 years of ongoing friendship and collaboration. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Catalogue published on the occasion of Lichtenstein Expressionism at Gagosian, rue de Ponthieu, Paris. This copy is clean and well bound, boards sturdy and firm. Interior is bright, clean, unmarked and scarcely opened. The pictorial plate on the front cover has a bad scuff at the top right, as well as some smaller scuffs next to it, and the cloth on the boards is rubbed and worn lightly in parts, but overall still a very attractive copy. This exhibition focused on Roy Lichtenstein's series of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture from 1979 through 1984 that interpreted motifs from early twentieth-century German Expressionism. Referencing artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Otto Dix, Franz Marc, and Alexej von Jawlensky, Lichtenstein translated the angular compositions and modernist palettes of their landscapes and figure paintings into his signature Pop style. Includes reproductions of all works in the exhibition, together with installation photographs; archival images of the artist in his Southampton, New York, studio; and a comprehensive section illustrating all the works in the series. An essay by Brenda Schmahmann considers the artist's engagement with art history, detailing his parodies of movements from German Expressionism to Abstract Expressionism. Hans Ulrich Obrist and Mayen Beckmann discuss Lichtenstein's work in relation to German Expressionism and its artists, with a focus on Beckmann's grandfather Max Beckmann. A conversation between Ruth Fine and Sidney B. Felsen traces the development of Lichtenstein's Expressionist Woodcut series (1980) with Gemini G.E.L.

Hardcover. Condición: New. Accompanying catalogue of an exhibition at Gagosian Gallery, Paris. The catalogue includes a fully illustrated, comprehensive listing of the paintings, drawings, and prints in Lichtenstein's Expressionism series. Among the styles and movements appropriated by Lichtenstein, his borrowing of Expressionist motifs--from Alexei Jawlensky's close-up, pensive faces to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's jagged, feline figures--strikes the clearest irony. Including key paintings, sculpture, drawings, and woodcuts, this catalogue demonstrates the bold paradox that Lichtenstein posed by translating Expressionist subjects into the primary colors and pop flatness of his signature style. BEAUTIFUL COPY!!.
