Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Our Revolutionary Forefathers' offers a compelling and firsthand perspective on the birth of the United States as seen through the eyes of François, Marquis de Barbé-Marbois. Serving as the secretary to the French legation during the height of the American Revolution, Barbé-Marbois provides a unique international viewpoint on the political and social landscape of the thirteen colonies between 1779 and 1785.The work is comprised of detailed letters and journals that capture the essence of a nation in the midst of transformation. Barbé-Marbois records his personal encounters with monumental figures such as George Washington and offers keen observations on the proceedings of the Continental Congress. Beyond high politics, the narrative delves into the daily lives, customs, and spirit of the American people, providing a vivid tapestry of the colonial era. From the strategic maneuvers of the war to the emerging democratic ideals of the new republic, these accounts serve as an invaluable primary source for understanding the early American experience. As an essential historical document, 'Our Revolutionary Forefathers' highlights the critical alliance between France and the United States, making it a must-read for scholars and history enthusiasts interested in the diplomatic and cultural foundations of the American nation. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. With illustrated decorations throughout by William Siegel. 8vo, publisher's original lavender cloth, the upper cover and spine lettered in gilt. ix, [3], 225 pp. A very good copy, some light mellowing to the colour of the spine panel and a bit of normal age evidence, the binding tight and sound and the text-block clean and bright. FIRST EDITION. François, Marquis de Barbé-Marbois 1745 1837) was a French civil servant, diplomat, and politician. He was responsible for negotiating the sale of Louisiana Territory, the Louisiana Purchase, between France and the United States. In 1779, he was made secretary of the French legation to the United States. In 1780, Barbé-Marbois sent a questionnaire to the governors of all thirteen former American colonies, seeking information about each state's geography, natural resources, history, and government. Thomas Jefferson, who was then finishing his final term as Virginia's governor, responded to this query with a manuscript that later became his famous Notes on the State of Virginia. Barbé-Marbois was elected a Foreign Honorary Member to both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. When the minister Chevalier de la Luzerne returned to France in 1783, Barbé-Marbois remained in America as chargé d'affaires in 1784. That year he married Elizabeth Moore, the daughter of William Moore, former governor of Pennsylvania. In 1785, he became intendant of the colony of Saint-Domingue under the Ancien Régime. In 1803 he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase treaty by which Louisiana was ceded to the United States, and was rewarded by the First Consul with a gift of 152,000 francs. Loyal to the First Empire, he was made grand officer of the Legion of Honour and a count in 1805, and in 1808 he became president of the Cour des Comptes. His career as Head of the Treasury ended in 1806. Barbé-Marbois was made Peer of France by King Louis XVIII, and confirmed in his office as president of the Cour des Comptes. In 1830, when the July Revolution brought Louis Philippe I and the Orléans Monarchy, Barbé-Marbois went, as president of the Cour des Comptes, to compliment the new king, and was confirmed in his position. He held his office until April 1834.…
