Es war bei seiner Gründung 1906 das erste medizingeschichtliche Institut der Welt und erlangte erhebliche Bedeutung für die Entstehung der modernen Wissenschaftsgeschichte sowie einer quellenorientierten Kulturwissenschaft und dies weit über den deutschsprachigen Raum hinaus. Die angeschlossene Bibliothek wurde maßgeblich vom Ordinarius des Institutes Karl Sudhoff (1853-1938), dem wichtigsten Medizinhistoriker des 20.
