Aun así, logró salvaguardar su propio estilo y cultura. Este relato en primera persona, sencillo y a veces intimista, no solo desvela su entorno doméstico, no por ello menos relevante, sino que aporta una visión única, a veces comprometedora, de una realidad social más o menos encubierta, difícil de encontrar en la historiografía común. Como ella misma dice, «no me atribuyo ningún mérito literario y solo he contado las experiencias de mi vida, mi doble vida, porque me lo han pedido.». Sea como sea, los entresijos y vicisitudes de esa vida y el cambiante entorno en que transcurre hacen que la historia de Emily Keene sea una obra excepcional y, cuando menos, sorprendente. Emily Keene. Hija del alcaide de una de las cárceles de Londres, nació en 1850 y se educó, por deseo propio, en un internado inglés. En 1872, con veintidós años, viajó a Marruecos acompañando a la familia Perdicaris, impulsada, tal vez, por la ilusión orientalista de su época y, muy probablemente, motivada por el deseo, compartido por otras muchas mujeres británicas, de escapar a la cerrazón victoriana. Como fuera, la joven llegó a Tánger y pronto atrajo la atención del Gran Jerife de Wazan, heredero de la influyente orden religiosa magrebí y uno de los hombres más poderosos del país, con el que contrajo matrimonio y tuvo dos hijos.
