Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the state of the Church of England in the years following the Reformation, offering a compelling snapshot of the challenges faced by the clergy. The author meticulously documents the vast disparities in income between wealthy benefices and those with meager resources, illuminating the plight of many clergy who struggled to provide for themselves and their families while fulfilling their duties. The work examines a system of charitable support for clergy with insufficient income, established by Queen Anne, which the author argues was intended to provide a more equitable distribution of resources. Through detailed accounts of various parishes and the distribution of tithes, the book illuminates the complex financial realities of the Church at this critical juncture. The book highlights a debate over appropriations, or the practice of transferring tithes from their original intended use to secular landlords. The author contends that appropriations posed greater financial hardship to the Protestant clergy than they had to their Catholic predecessors, underscoring the lasting impact of these practices on the Church's resources. Ultimately, this book offers invaluable insights into the social and economic realities of the Church of England in the post-Reformation era, revealing the challenges faced by clergy and the mechanisms put in place to address them. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Suitable for rebinding/restoration. A once practical reference, and now of historical interest, listing all the churches in England and Wales, with various details of their tithes, patrons and chargeable rates etc. It appeared in seven editions between 1723 and 1796, with the 1754 edition generally considered the best of them. John Ecton (died 1730), the compiler, was the receiver of the tenths of the clergy in the first-fruits office of Queen Anne's Bounty (a scheme devised in the early 18th century to alleviate the low incomes of poor clergymen); but he is also remembered for the fine collection of musical instruments he amassed, which was eventually bequeathed to church music composer, James Kent. In 1786, John Bacon, a successor of Ecton at the first-fruits office, changed the title of the book to Liber Regis and claimed it as his own, without even revising Ecton's preface.
