Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book focuses on a dispute that took place in the mid-19th century between Professor Edward Hawkins, Provost of Oriel College, and Sir Culling Eardley, a prominent layperson and former member of the college. The dispute originated from the authorâs desire to return to his old college after his separation from the Church of England, which led Hawkins to refuse his re-admission on the basis of the universityâs statutes, including the one against schism. The dispute is explored through a series of letters exchanged between the two men over the issue. These letters document the positions of both Hawkins and Eardley, revealing their arguments and the challenges they faced in trying to reconcile Eardleyâs personal beliefs with the universityâs rules. Ultimately, the book sheds light on the complex relationship between religious belief and academic freedom in Victorian England. It explores the ongoing debate about the role of religious tests in higher education and the extent to which individuals should be allowed to pursue their own beliefs within established religious institutions.
