Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book focuses on a dispute that took place in the mid-19th century between Professor Edward Hawkins, Provost of Oriel College, and Sir Culling Eardley, a prominent layperson and former member of the college. The dispute originated from the authorâs desire to return to his old college after his separation from the Church of England, which led Hawkins to refuse his re-admission on the basis of the universityâs statutes, including the one against schism. The dispute is explored through a series of letters exchanged between the two men over the issue. These letters document the positions of both Hawkins and Eardley, revealing their arguments and the challenges they faced in trying to reconcile Eardleyâs personal beliefs with the universityâs rules. Ultimately, the book sheds light on the complex relationship between religious belief and academic freedom in Victorian England. It explores the ongoing debate about the role of religious tests in higher education and the extent to which individuals should be allowed to pursue their own beliefs within established religious institutions. This book tells the dramatic story of Dr. Achilli, a former Roman Catholic priest who converted to evangelical Christianity and found himself imprisoned in Rome in 1849. The author details Dr. Achilli's life, his conversion, and the events leading up to his imprisonment, offering insight into the complex political and religious climate of 19th-century Italy. The book paints a vivid picture of the oppressive nature of the Papal State and the dangers faced by those who dared to challenge its authority. Through letters and journals, the reader witnesses Dr. Achilli's evangelistic efforts, his attempts to spread the Bible and Protestant teachings in a country steeped in Roman Catholicism, and his unwavering faith even in the face of adversity. The book also explores the tensions between religious and secular power, as Dr. Achilli's story unfolds against the backdrop of the Roman Republic's struggle for independence. Ultimately, this book provides a compelling glimpse into the life of a man who bravely stood against religious intolerance and fought for the freedom to embrace his faith.
