Wilhelm Bleek and his sister-in-law Lucy Lloyd documented the language of the |Xam Bushmen by taking down by dictation, in a phonetic script they had developed, more than 12,000 pages of folklore, accounts of daily life, and descriptions of rituals. The first part of the book describes these two unusual personalities and their work, the second the research that has followed.
