Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Here is "The House With the Green Shutters" by George Douglas, originally issued in 1901. This edition, published by Collins Clear Type Press, circa 1940 is a handsome cloth-bound hardcover, complete with dust-jacket issued in their Library of Classics, and has an Introduction by R. W. Drawbell. George Douglas Brown was a Scotsman, born in Ochiltree, Ayreshire in 1869. He decided to write the novel using only his first and middle name. This was his only novel, but it was very popular at the time of it first publication. This Scottish realist novel is a somewhat difficult work to tackle, using as it does the curiosities of the local language and a fairly dense prose. But it is well worth the reading. The novel paints a grim picture of economic warfare played out by the local Scottish businessmen against each other. At the center is the market town of Barbie and the Gourlay family, ruled over by John Gourlay. As depicted by George Douglas , Gourlay is a bitter, driven man, seemingly at war with the world, and especially jealous of any perception on his part that his neighbors might be outpacing him in the acquisition of economic success. Drawbell says, in his introduction : "The strength of the characterisation is that you accept Gourlay. You know him to be true. You never doubt his tempers or his tantrums. He is gloriously alive. And for all his faults you never doubt his manhood. He may be gross, he may be brutal, but he is definitely a man. And in the company of the 'bodies' of Barbie, a man among mongrels." SERIES : Library of Classics TITLE : The House With the Green Shutters AUTHOR : George Douglas (George Douglas Brown, 1869 - 1902) INTRODUCTION : R. W. Design, production and text by David Douglas Duncan. Red cloth stamped in gold. Lacking dust jacket. "To those who rushed past Mr. Forss on Midtown Manhattan sidewalks, he was just another street peddler. But that all changed in 1980, when the renowned photojournalist David Douglas Duncan encountered him near Grand Central Terminal and was riveted by his work. A former staff photographer for Life magazine, Mr. Duncan decided to use his influence to promote Mr. Forss. Mr. Duncan published a photography book, "New York/New York: Masterworks of a Street Peddler," through McGraw-Hill in 1984, and it made Mr. Forss a sensation."-nyt.…

From title page: "He is great who succeeds in changing my state of mind." - Emerson. Each chapter begins with a unique quotation of historical acclaim from an individual who saw truth for themselves. Presented here is a book about unusual people. The author has named them "The Mind-Changers," because they belong to the group of thinkers and workers whose influence has been potent in altering and moulding opinion. A volume about extraordinary thinkers for extraordinay thinkers. Those whose minds move to a stereo-typed groove may find it provokingly controversial. There is no use for blind acceptance of the hasty verdicts from history or "experts". E. Douglas Hume sheds new light on many of the so-called heroes of popular prejudice or pre-judgment. Readers will add much of interest and incalculable value to their knowledge and may just change their minds on innumerable subjects that are supposedly settled. Contents: "I. The Good Old Days; II.
