Graham Greene met Dorothy Glover in London in the spring of 1939 on the even of World War Two. Glover was working as a theatre costume designer in the West End. Greene, having just finished Brighton Rock and struggling to write two novels he'd accepted advances for?The Confidential Agent and The Power and the Glory?felt unable to work at his family home due to his rocky marriage and noisy three-year-old son. So he rented a writing studio from Glover in Bloomsbury's Mecklenburg Square, where Glover lived with her mother. Shortly afterwards Greene and Glover began an affair. FORN-SHELF-0635-BB-2605-EF302.

Signed by Glover, Greene and Carter beneath the limitation statement to rear. In the publisher's dark green cloth, gilt blocked titles to spine. Pale blue stained top edge, somewhat faded. Illustrated endpapers. Unclipped dust jacket, housed within a removable cellophane sleeve, is a very bright example, with no wear, fading or discolouration. The book likewise has no signs of wear, but there is some minor rippling to the pages along the top edges, starting near the spine and extending across for about 3cm, and reaching down by some 8cm, which starts at the front and disappears by pp. 51. There is no sign of any water ingress, so perhaps even a manufacturing flaw. A small mark to leading page edges. Still a very bright, attractive copy. xviii, [2], 149, [3]. With publisher's prospectus laid in, along with a Greene related newspaper clipping which notes that Greene enjoyed a romantic relationship with Glover, a stage designer, for some nine years.

Complete collection of children's books written by Greene in a series of four books in collaboration with Dorothy Glover, who appeared under the pseudonym "Dorothy Craigie." Greene would later acknowledge authorship of the first of these children s books, "The Little Train," on the title page of The "Little Fire Engine." Greene and Glover became lovers and lived together for much of the war, each working as fire spotters and Dorothy as a bomb shelter warden, while Greene's wife Vivien and their children lived in safety in Oxford. "The Little Train," published 1946, oblong, quarto, pictorial cloths with rust spot on endpaper from binding staples. Previous owner name on top corner of the front endpaper. In price clipped, second state dust wrapper, with reviews to the front flap. Dust jacket has 5 very small edge chips. 10" - 7¼". "The Little Fire Engine," published 1950, very good dust jacket with small closed, edge tears and chips, not price-clipped (6s. net). First edition, first impression, 10" - 7¼". Original publisher's price-clipped second state color pictorial paper dust jacket repeating the design of the book's cover with the addition of titles printed in black to spine, with slight sunning to the edges and spine, extremely minor chipping to the flap fold corners and tail of spine, and one small discolored spot to back flap for what is a really nice copy of the dust jacket. Color pictorial map within a border of locomotives endpapers. Top edge stained yellow as issued. [3], 42, [3] pp. Graham Greene's first children's book, for which he gave writing credit to his then girlfriend, Dorothy Glover (1901-1991), under the pseudonym Dorothy Craigie. Craigie would also illustrate the other three children's books penned by Greene: The Little Fire Engine(1950), The Little Horse Bus (1952) and The Little Steamroller (1953). The Little Train is a cautionary tale about a little locomotive that was bored with its life, running the same short section of track day in and day out. He decides to run away and see the rest of the world. No spoiler here as to how the story ends. The condition of both the book and the dust jacket are VERY GOOD +. SCARCE.
