Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Following the tragic death of his parents, the Earl of Cairnforth inherits his title at just a few hours old. Orphaned, disabled, and facing a life of pain and loneliness, those around him think it might be better if he doesn't survive. They have reckoned without the indomitable spirit that…enables the Earl to transform his estate and touch the lives of everyone he meets. But the hardest challenge of all proves to be betrayal by the woman he has loved since childhood. Can the Earl find a way to build a family, in spite of what he has lost? In this poignant novel, Dinah Mulock Craik places a disabled hero at the centre of her narrative, offering a radical perspective on nineteenth-century attitudes to disability, family, and what it means to live a worthwhile life. Paperback. Condición: Near fine. First. In the 1960s and early 1970s, Keith Albarn was a freelance artist who specialized in design commissions of all kinds, but particularly for festivals and exhibitions, alongside his own environmental art. He later created the group Vertex, with Jenny Miall Smith, Stanford Steele, and Dinah W…alker, which allowed him to both pursue an interest in pattern and mathematics while applying that interest to commercial design ventures. In one important case, Vertex worked on the World of Islam Festival at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. The group's research and artistic inquiry in light of the festival resulted in this book, "The Language of Pattern: An Enquiry Inspired by Islamic Decoration." Though Vertex itself does not appear to have lasted very long, Albarn's fascination with pattern and how it applied not only to art but to the larger philosophical questions continued virtually for the rest of his life, culminating in a solo multimedia exhibition at the Minories Galleries in 2013 called "Pattern and Belief." "For over forty years Keith Albarn has been researching number systems and patterns, and their relationship to belief systems and creativity," the exhibition website says, and both the Minories Galleries and Albarn believed in his work so fervently that Albarn purposely left the section of his website about the exhibition"live" twelve years after the original exhibition's opening. It is still live even after Albarn's death in 2024, so to encourage further exploration and, as it says, "interconnectedness." Yet it all began with this book, back when it was first published in 1974. Our copy is in near fine condition, with the only visible flaws being a bump and small scuff on the bottom of the spine and some age tanning on the fore edge of the pages. There is no writing or other marks on the pages or the covers, and the text block is tight and straight, with no missing or damaged pages. It is a paperback but with a French flapa.k.a. gatefoldcover. The copyright page indicates this title was first published in the U.K. by Thames and Hudson and states explicitly that this copy is part of the first U.S. edition. Please see our photos.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Federal surgeon Erik Reichmann searches for a contraband of medical supplies in Savannah during Sherman's March to the sea, and discovers Layla Stuart, apothecarian, midwife, and smuggler up to her neck in intrigue, she in a photo and letter he retrieved off her brother a year before. Told her twi…n was killed by a sawbonz, Layla believed her beau left the Yankee for dead. Erik wants revenge and his mother's ring on Layla's finger. Trying various means of seduction, he lodges in the Stuart household to find the whereabouts of the shipment and Layla's beau (thought to be her husband). He learns the truth of her marital status and against his better judgement, cannot avoid the building flames of desire for this willful woman. Layla wants no part of this Yankee, but she is weak to his advances, good looks, strange philosophy and bedside manner. Intrigue surmounts when Erik's adversary exposes the 'truth' about her twin. Although Layla loses all trust in Erik, she realizes she's smitten. To discover the truth as much as these feelings tearing her apart, she takes the shipment to find her beau. Unfortunately the trap has been set. Layla is shot, literally blinded and nearly drowned until Erik rescues and heals her back to health. Layla discovers passion and unconditional love, and soon Erik convinces her to marry him before he leaves Savannah. While he follows Sherman through the Carolinas, Layla's beau returns. Blind, she still knows the truth despite his lies, and discovers the ring she use to wear is Erik's mother's. Maddened with jealousy, her beau ignites a fire to Layla's shop and home. As Erik saves her from a burning inferno, her sight returns and she is forced to make a choice between the two loves of her life.
