Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. With Ultimate Atlas, Theo Deutinger-architect, designer and author of the acclaimed Handbook of Tyranny- illustrates the basic data of Earth and its inhabitants to create a total portrait of the planet. How can we keep track of everything that happens on the Earth? How can we share this information with its inhabitants, despite their different languages and cultural backgrounds? Expanding on the visions of Buckminster Fuller and Stewart Brand, Ultimate Atlas answers these questions by radically levelling graphic data. Breaking down planet earth into 12 sections, the book gives a page spread to information pertaining to themes like ethnic groups, religions, nuclear warheads, and number of motor vehicles per country. The white pages of the book are divided by vertical black lines, in decreasing percentages from left to right. In this way Ultimate Atlas charts the planet with an impressive simplicity and clarity. The territorial size of Earth's countries; the planet's most commonly spoken languages; the places where the most chickens are raised; all this information is lucidly displayed for ready comprehension. Here is truly "planet earth in a book.".

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. An updated edition of the essential guide to the 21st century's new infrastructure of oppression and surveillance. Handbook of Tyranny portrays the routine cruelties of the 21st century through a series of detailed nonfictional graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence - they reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe. Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The dry and factual style of storytelling through technical drawings is the graphic equivalent to bureaucratic rigidity born of laws and regulations. The level of detail depicted in the illustrations of the book mirrors the repressive efforts taken by authorities around the globe. The 21st century shows a general striving for an ever more regulated and protective society. Yet the scale of authoritarian intervention and its stealth design adds to the growing difficulty of linking cause and effect. By bluntly showing the designs, Handbook of Tyranny gives a profound insight into the relationship between political power, territoriality and systematic cruelties. AUTHOR: Theo Deutinger is an architect, writer and designer of sociocultural maps. He has regular lecture and teaching engagements with various institutions, including Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Strelka Institute Moscow and the Bauhaus in Dessau. SELLING POINTS: . This book questions today's laws and regulations and our current world of walls, police, prisons, and refugees . The storytelling in this book is done through technical drawings and illustrations . Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Theo Deutinger's ingenious continuation of Neurath's info-design classic Modern Man in the Making tracks the successes and failures of modernity. Brilliantly adapting and updating Otto Neurath's pioneering 1939 study Modern Man in the Making, Theo Deutinger's (born 1971) Joy and Fear questions how modernity, through its promises and failures, continues to reshape humanity. For the West, these promises have largely been fulfilled: computers and domestic technology have made life easier; hygiene, modern medicine and education have led to steep increases in health, life expectancy and literacy rates. For large parts of the world's population, however, these promises have not been fulfilled. For example, the current average life expectancy in Chad is equal to that of the United States in the 1920s, and at 52 is eight years below the retirement age there. The entire globe is irreversibly involved in the modern project, but its benefits are very unevenly distributed. By depicting these asymmetries in a visual language that makes complex issues immediately accessible, Joy and Fear brings clarity to today's world. The pictograms and illustrations and their accompanying texts touch on global issues ranging from agriculture to warfare to the welfare state. Thematic and chronological affinities allow cross-referencing between topics throughout the book. Joy and Fear is aimed at a broad audience interested in the evolution of modernity, its quirks and its pitfalls. AUTHOR: Theo Deutinger is an architect, writer and designer of sociocultural studies, and the author of Handbook of Tyranny. SELLING POINTS: . A 21st-century reexamination of Otto Neurath's 1930s info-graphic classic, Modern Man in the Making-a symbolic way of representing quantitative information via easily interpretable icons. . Organized thematically from Leisure to War and from Agriculture to Population-today's complex issues about humanity and modernity are made accessible through pictograms and illustrations. Cover is a reflective surface that acts as mirror. 217 illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
