This book is a product of he two workshops held in November 2008 and May 2009 at Koc University, Istanbul, within the scope of the project entitled 'Irregular Migration at Two Borders : The Turkish-EU and Mexican-USA Cases' and funded by the German Marshall Fund of the United States. The editors have greatly benefitted from the papers and views presented during these workshops and they ar deeply thankfil to the participants, some of whom have also contributed to this volume. The volume has generally followed the objectives of the project, including highlighting the phenomena of irregular migration both as an issue of securitization and economization in two different geographical settings, suggesting relevant policy changes and creating an effective forum for discussion on the topic among academics, policymakers, implementers and civil society actors in the countries involved. The Greek-Turkish War of 1919-1923-also known as the Western Front of the Turkish War of Liberation and the Asia Minor Campaign-was one of the key aftershocks of the First World War. Internationally better known for its aftermath, the Compulsory Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey, the Catastrophe of Ottoman Greeks, and the foundation of the Republic of Turkey under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the war has never been given a holistic treatment in English, despite its long shadow over the Greek-Turkish relationship. The contributors in this volume address this gap by brining to the fore, on its centenary, aspects of the onset, conduct, and aftermath of this war. Combining insights from the study of international relations, political science, strategic studies, military history, migration studies, and social history the contributions tell the story of leaders and decisions, battles and campaigns, voluntary and involuntary migration, and the human stories of suffering and resilience. The main question is, how people's activities across national borders emerge, function, and change, and how are they related to the processes of governance in increasingly complex and interconnected world The book is based on the findings of a three-year research project TRANS-NET which brough together internationally acknowledged experts from Europe, Asia and Africa. As no single discipline could investigate all the components of the topic in question, the project adopted a multi-disciplinary approach: among the contributors, there are sociologists, policy analysts, political scientists, social and cultural anthropologists, educational scientists, and economists. The chapters show that people's transnational linkages and migration across national boundaries entail manifold political, economic, social, cultural and educational implications. Although political-social-economic-educational transformations fostered by migrant transnationalism constitute the main topic of the book, the starting assumption is that the large-scale institutional and actor-centred patterns of transformation come about through a constellation of parallel processes.…
