Original printed yellow wrappers, lettered in brown on the spine and front cover, lg 8vo. The volume contains 10 chapters by notable authorities on the field; the titles of four papers follow: Evolution of Hallucial Grasping in the primates; Implications of postcranial evidence for the origin of euprimates; Adaptive diversification of Malagasy strepsirrhines; and Relative joint size and hominoid locomotor adaptations with implications for the evolution of hominid bipedalism. This work is reprinted from Journal of Human Evolution, volume 17, no. 1/2 (1988). No ownership marks and few signs of use. A bright and clean copy in near fine condition.…

Hardcover. Condición: Sehr gut. Gebraucht - Sehr gut - ungelesen, als Mängelexemplar gekennzeichnet, mit leichten Mängeln an Schnitt oder Einband durch Lager- oder Transportschaden -This volume acknowledges and celebrates the contributions of Dr. Frederick S. Szalay to the field of Mammalian Evolutionary Morphology. Professor Szalay has published about 200 articles, four monographs, and six books on this subject. Throughout his career Professor Szalay has been a strong advocate for biologically and evolutionarily meaningful character analysis. In his view, this can be accomplished only through an integrated strategy of functional, adaptational, and historical analysis. Dr. Szalay worked on several different mammalian groups during his career, and the contributions to this volume reflect his broad perspective. Chapters focus on Primates, a group to which Professor Szalay dedicated much of his career. However, other mammalian groups on which he conducted a significant amount of research, such as marsupials and xenarthrans, are also covered in the volume. This book will be of interest to professionals and graduate students in a wide variety of related fields, including functional morphology, systematics, vertebrate paleontology, mammalogy, primatology, biological anthropology, and evolutionary biology.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 467 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book updates, summarizes and synthesizes past and current research regarding the origin of the Order Primates. When did Primates arise To what group of mammals are they most closely related What is the functional and adaptive meaning of their constellation of derived characteristics The papers in this volume examine hypotheses that have dominated our notions regarding early primate evolution and by coupling this with an emergent body of novel evidence due to new fossil discoveries and technological and methodological advances, provide a long overdue multidisciplinary reanalysis of the suite of derived life history, socioecological, neural, visual, circumorbital, locomotor, postural and masticatory specializations of the first primates. This integrative neontological and paleontological perspective is critical for understanding major behavioral and morphological transformations during the later evolution of higher primate clades. Primate Origins: Adaptations and Evolutionis ideal for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and professionals in the fields of primatology, anthropology, mammalogy, and paleontology.…
