Añadir al carritoOctavo, navy blue cloth & blue boards (hardcover), silver lettering, xvi, 370 pp. Very Good, with light wear to covers. From Foreword: Between 1763 and 1821, no part of the South's expanding frontier experienced more transition than colonial Florida. In 1763, following the end of the French and Indian War, Britain acquired the province from Spain only to cede it back to the Spanish Crown in 1783 after the Peace of Paris granted independence to the United States. To administer Florida, England had divided the vast territory into East Florida (encompassing the entire peninsula east of the Apalachicola River, with its capital in St. Augustine) and West Florida (extending far west of the Apalachicola into the present states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, with its capital at Pensacola). Under Spanish control, the Floridas suffered from colonial benign neglect and, after 1808, when Spain and England became allies, from the imperialistic gaze of their maturing neighbor to the North, the United States. In The Other War of 812, James Cusick brings to life a gripping but little known episode in southern history -- Florida's Patriot War of 1812 -14. Drawing heavily upon colonial records of Spanish East Florida and a wealth of other primary sources, Cusick provides the first modern narrative and analysis of the America invasion of Spanish Florida in March 1812 and its place in the expansionist foreign policy of President James Madison and Secretary of State James Monroe. Determined to drive Spain from the Gulf Coast and the Florida peninsula, Madison and Monroe were equally committed to denying England control over this corner of America's evolving frontier. In 1810, for example, after American settlers in the Baton Rouge District of West Florida staged a coup, Madison immediately declared West Florida (except for the Mobile District) part of Louisiana Territory, which the United States had acquired in 1803. Convinced that East Florida would succumb as easily, Madison appointed General George Mathews, former governor of Georgia, as a U. S. commissioner and authorized him to lead a filibuster expedition into the vulnerable and valuable Spanish province. American leaders justified their scheme by alleging that U. S. forces were assisting a local revolt against Spanish oppression and against smugglers, British spies, and rebellious Indians and runaway slaves who threatened their security. According to Cusick, the resulting filibuster "miscarried into military invasion, embarrassing President Madison, complicating American strategy during the War of 1812, and plunging the southern frontier into a lengthy and destructive blood feud." Sponsored by the U.S. government, Mathews outfitted a private army along the Georgia-Florida border. The "Patriots" consisted largely of disenfranchised frontiersmen from both sides of the border as well as Georgia militiamen. Supported by American naval and military forces, Mathews's band of filibusters invaded Florida and easily captured Fernandina on Amelia Island in the name of the United States. Buoyed by their success, the Patriots moved southward, overwhelming Spanish outposts, and set their sights on capturing St. Augustine. The Patriots' "rebellion" escalated quickly into a "war" as American forces subjected the East Florida capital to a long siege. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, United States History, U. S. Añadir al carritohardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Missing. No dust jacket, light soiling to boards, minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Resurrecting a forgotten chapter in transatlantic history, James G. Cusick tells how, just before the United States went to war against Great Britain in 1812, an ill-advised invasion of a Spanish colony became a stage on which the young republic clumsily acted out its imperial ambitions and racial fears. With the halfhearted backing of President James Madison and Secretary of State James Monroe, a party of Georgians invaded East Florida, confident that partisans there would help them swiftly wrest the colony away from Spain. The raid was a strategic and political disaster. Few sympathizers materialized, official U.S. support dissolved, and an extended guerrilla war ensued. This was the "other war of 1812," or the Patriot War. Cusick, a lively storyteller as well as a meticulous scholar, conveys the savagery of the borderlands conflict that pitted American adventurers and anti-Spanish partisans against Spanish loyalists and their allies, who included Seminole Indians and escaped slaves. At the same time, Cusick looks at the American motivations behind the invasion, including apprehensions about Florida's growing population of unregulated blacks and geopolitical intrigues involving Spain, Britain, and France.
