This rare book explores the life and career of John Dafte, a 17th-century London gunmaker, and his involvement in the Rye House Plot of 1683, a failed conspiracy to assassinate King Charles II and James, Duke of York. The book provides historical context, details of Dafte's gunsmithing career, and an illustrated catalogue of surviving firearms attributed to him. This first edition was privately published in a limited run of 100 copies, twenty of which were leather-bound. It includes photographs, maps, plans, and drawings, along with a fold-out map of Rye House, where the conspiracy was centered. The book is known for its detailed research and historical insights into both Dafte's work and the broader political intrigue of the time. Ref DDD 1.
