Cooper Jr. (born October 22, 1940) is an American historian who specializes in the history of the American South, and is regarded as a leading expert on the life of Jefferson Davis. Cooper studied at Princeton University and Johns Hopkins University. After two years of service as an officer in the U.S. Army, he went on to spend his entire academic career at Louisiana State University. He is a past president of the Southern Historical Association William J. Cooper, Jr. is Boyd Professor Emeritus of History at Louisiana State University and the author of numerous books on southern history, including Jefferson Davis, American, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Why has John Quincy Adams been largely written out of American history when he is, in fact, our lost Founding Father? Long relegated to the sidelines of history as the hyperintellectual son of John and Abigail Adams, John Quincy Adams (1767-1848), has never basked in the historical spotlight. Remembered, if at all, as an ineffective president during an especially rancorous time, Adams was humiliated in office after the contested election of 1824, viciously assailed by populist opponents for being both slippery and effete, and then resoundingly defeated by the western war hero Andrew Jackson, whose 1828 election ushered in an era of unparalleled expansion. Aware of this reputation yet convinced that Adams deserves a reconsideration, award-winning historian William J. Cooper has reframed the sixth president's life in an entirely original way, demonstrating that Adams should be considered our lost Founding Father, his morality and political philosophy the final link to the great visionaries who created our nation. As Cooper demonstrates, no one else in his generation, not Clay, Webster, Calhoun, or Jackson, ever experienced Europe as young Adams did, who at fourteen translated from French at the court of Catherine the Great. In fact, Adams's very exposure to the ideas of the European Enlightenment that had so influenced the Founding Fathers, including their embrace of reason, were hardly shared by his contemporaries, particularly those who could not countenance slaves as equal human beings. Such differences, as Cooper narrates, became particularly significant after Adams's failed presidency, when he, along with his increasingly reclusive wife, Louisa Catherine Adams, returned to Washington as a Massachusetts congressman in 1831. With his implacable foe Andrew Jackson in the White House, Adams passionately took up the antislavery cause. Despite raucous opposition from southern and northern politicians, Adams refused to relent, his protests so vehement that Congress enacted the gag rule in the 1830s specifically to silence him. With his impassioned public pronouncements and his heroic arguments in the Amistad trial, a defiant Adams was no longer viewed as a failed president but a national, albeit curmudgeonly, hero, who finally collapsed on the floor of the House chamber in 1848 and died in the capital three days later. Ironically, Adams's death and the extraordinary obsequies produced an outpouring of national, and bipartisan, grief never before seen in the nineteenth century, as if the country had truly lost its last Founding Father. Now, in another fractious age, the courageous life of John Quincy Adams suddenly takes on renewed vigor and meaning, as William J. Cooper's momentous biography so eloquently affirms. Rebound Hard Cover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Memories of Buffalo Bill by Louisa Frederici Cody, in collaboration with Courtney Ryley Cooper, was published by D. Appleton and Company in 1920. This 5" X 7 1/2", 326-page, 93-year-old, believed-to-be First Edition offering is an ex-library copy in G condition. It is only in GOOD condition, please do not buy this book if you are looking for a pristine collector's edition. It is a nice, rebound very old copy of the original. There is some modest yellowing of end papers front and back as well as pages of text. There are some of the standard library markings in place, and light, random foxing is seen on a fairly substantial number of pages throughout. A somewhat rough patch exists on the front paste down page where someone, in past days, removed the circulation card holder/pocket. Overall, the book, at age 93, remains in quite decent shape. And, what a book this is. If William Frederick Cody(1845-1916), more popularly known as "Buffalo Bill", is an individual who interests you, Reader, then this offering is a MUST READ. I can only surmise the extent of the contribution made by C.R. Cooper, but I'm thinking it was considerable. All the while I was reading large portions of this book, however, I was struck by how authentic and accurate Louisa Cody's recollections were regarding her beloved "Willie". Cody, at various points in his colorful life, was a Pony Express rider, railroad construction worker, judge and justice of the peace, actor, extra hand on wagon trains heading to the West, military scout, Indian fighter, buffalo hunter, U.S. government negotiator with the Sioux Indian Nation during final treaty signing, and creator and star of his world famous, touring Wild West Show. In the process, notables like Kit Carson, Wild Bill Hickok, Sitting Bull, the Prince of Wales, Gen. George Armstrong Custer, and Ned Buntline pass in front of you. NOTE: One fact that amazed me was that William Cody was an invaluable assistant to the U.S. government's lead negotiator, General Nelson Appleton Miles(at the time, the foremost general in the ongoing battle with bringing the Indian Problem to a close) in the peace treaty discussions with the Dakota Sioux Nation. The last "i" was dotted in 1890, and MALE SIOUX HOSTAGES WERE TAKEN BY OUR GOVERNMENT, AND THREATENED WITH DEATH, SHOULD THE INDIANS NOT ABIDE BY THE TREATY'S PROVISIONS. In fact, Cody hired a fairly significant number of those hostages as performers in his ongoing Wild West Show. Too, the entire, true story behind the massacre at Wounded Knee(but, told primarily from the Indians' perspective/point of view) made for some of the most fascinating reading I've experienced in a long, long time. The book's lone Illustration is the Frontispiece, a photograph of Buffalo Bill, age about 45-50, in Western regalia, with his trusty rifle propped in front of him. This is simply an amazing book, in my humble estimation, Reader. Thanks!.…

Soft cover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition. Precious opal is a rainbow made tangible. Its spectral blaze of color moves, changes, intensifies, fades, or disappears with the slightest change of perspective. Opal's intriguing play of color and unique atomic arrangement have made it the subject of scientific probing from early optics in the 1850s to a high-tech photonics today. Equally challenging has been discovering opal's place in history. Opal, both precious and common, is found in disparate environments from the unbearable heat of the Australian outback to the higher elevations of the Canadian Rockies, from a centuries-old site in Slovakia to a number of little-known places in the American west. A natural, wearable stone with magical depth, movement, and color, opal is a truly phenomenal gemstone. Jenni Brammall; Jeff Scovil; Karl-Christian Lyncker; Janet Clifford; Robert A.
