Browse this Book on GoogleEnduring Motives examines tradition and religious beliefs as they are expressed in landscape, the built environment, visual symbols, stories, and ritual. Bringing together archaeologists and Native American experts, this volume focuses on long-lived religious traditions of the native peoples of the Americas and how religion codifies, justifies, and reinforces these traditions by placing a high value on continuity of beliefs and practice. Using clues from the archaeological record to piece together the oldest religions of the Americas, Enduring Motives is organized into four parts. Part 1 creates continuity through structure, iconography, and sacred stories that correspond to culture-specific symbolic representations of the universe. Part 2 explores the encoding of tradition in place and object, or how people use objects to enliven tradition and pass it on to future generations. Part 3 examines stability and change and shows how traditions can evolve over time without losing their core cultural significance. The final part recognizes deep-time traditions through the evidence of ancient cosmology and religious tradition. Spanning cultures as diverse as the Aztec, Plains Indians, Hopi, Mississippian, and Southwest Pueblo, Enduring Motives brings to light new insights on ancient religious beliefs, practices, methods, and techniques, which allow otherwise intangible facets of culture to be productively explored.

Part III contains the Proceedings of the San Antonio Conference on Psychological Measures and Leadership. The book also contains the Proceedings of the San Antonio Conference on Psychological Measures and Leadership. This book promises to become a fundamental/foundational text for the field of leadership thinking and research. This three-part book reveals more about the qualities of managers and leaders than any other single source. Anyone who presumes to do anything in this area will, of necessity, need to have this handbook. Kenneth E. Clark was one of the American Psychological Association's (APA's) most active members over a 50-year period. He received his doctorate in psychology from the Ohio State University in 1940 and shortly thereafter joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota. During World War II, he moved to Washington, DC, and, as a civilian, worked for the U.S. Army and then the Army Air Force; subsequently, he worked as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Navy. He assessed the talents and skills of sailors and then assigned them to occupational specialties, exhibiting a general interest in talent and assessment that he was to retain for the remainder of his career. Returning to the University of Minnesota after the war, Ken served as department chairman from 1957 to 1960 and then served as associate dean of the graduate school. In 1960, he moved to the University of Colorado at Boulder as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In the spring of 1963, Kenneth moved to the University of Rochester, again as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, a position he held until his retirement in 1980. Beyond APA, Kenneth also represented psychology in an amazing array of roles. He was a member of the President's National Medal of Science Committee, president of the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology, chair of the Association for the Advancement of Psychology, chair of the American Conference of Academic Deans, chair of the Research Advisory Board for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a member of the Army Scientific Advisory Panel, and chair of the Veterans Administration's Area Advisory Council in Psychology. Kenneth received numerous formal awards. Among them were the Annual Outstanding Research Award from the American Personnel and Guidance Association in 1963, the E. K. Strong Memorial Gold Medal for excellence in psychological testing in 1967, appointment as a honorary life fellow by the Canadian Psychological Association in 1968, the Centennial Achievement Award from the Ohio State University in 1970, and the Gold Medal Award of the American Psychological Foundation in 1986 for a lifetime of exceptional contributions to psychology. One of Kenneth's major contributions was the nurturance and growth of the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) in Greensboro, North Carolina. He joined the center's board of governors in 1972. On his retirement from the University of Rochester, he became president of the center from 1981 to 1985. Under Kenneth's guidance, the center flourished and is today one of psychology's most respected applied, nonprofit institutions. When he retired for the second time, to become a Smith Richardson Senior Scientist (for life), his retirement gifts from the CCL staff included a 12-foot-long, 3-inch-diameter wooden pole with the inscription, "For Kenneth Clark, a leader who routinely solves problems that other people wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.".

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Evanston, IL: Clark Publishing Company, 1956. The June, 1956 issue of Fate Magazine (issue no. 75) in Raymond A. Palmer's now-legendary paranormal-reporting non-fiction enterprise, which began with, in its first issue, Kenneth Arnold's cover account of flying crescents which "skipped like saucers across a pond", an event which, for whatever reason, kicked off the modern era of UFO events. After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. 12mo, illustrated perfect-bound wraps, 130 pp. A Near Fine copy - very near fine, with just touch edge wear on a small scale, light sunning at rear cover top and bottom (see scans), and of course some modest age-toning to the newsprint paper pages, which remain supple. High Grade, particularly for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. See scans. See the scanned image of the contents page for the articles herein, which cover such topics as UFOS Over Japan; Parapsychology; Ghost on British Highways; Teleportation; Precognition; Appolonius of Tyana; Transformation; Time Travel; The Headless Horseman of Belmont; an Unruly Poltergeist; and of course much, much else, including the standard Departments, always engrossing in themselves, all on various other paranormal or inexplicable phenomena. Interior art and photography is largely uncredited. A piece of paranormal history, and an example of a unique branch of Americana, in very highly collectible condition. Please see scans. l50n.

May, 1951 issue [Vol 36, No. 5]. Original printed wrappers, 9" x 6", 172 pp + plates. Photographs. A very strong Near Fine; essentially flawless but for darkening to the spine; this issue was one of the ones for which the wraps were of a robin's egg-blue color, and the pigment for that type cover has become toned in every case I know of. See scans. Ansel Adams frontispiece of Sentinel Rock; twelve High Sierra photographs by Philip Hyde; 8 pages of Bradford Washburn photographs of the first ascent of Mount Deception; other photos both credited and uncredited, thirty-five pages of plates in all. Articles (see scan of contents page) cover the inspiring topics the club has always focused on, and were contributed by Allen P. Steck, Lewis F. Clark, Harold C. Bradley, Erwin C. Gudde, Paul H. Pfeiffer, William E. Long, Annelore Wagner, Robert F. Uhte, Carl P. Russell, Horace M. Albright, Arthur E. Harrison, William W. Dunmire, Andre Roch, Bradford Washburn, Hervey Voge, Richard M. Haynes, Marion Randall Parsons, Fred Herz, E. L. Macaulay, Bayard H. Jones, C.O. Schneider Ilustrador. First Edition. San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1926. First Edition. Vol XII, No. 3, for 1926. This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue, just the volume, the number, and the year monthly designations for such an infrequent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers, 9 1/4" x 6 1/4", 120 pp. + unpaginated photographic plates and ads, including hachure maps of Yosemite Valley and Kings River Canon (canyon), and a fold-out with bi-scale elevations of the same two locales. also, a plate with an illustration of the 14' tall monument, of galvanized iron with a brass base, installed at the top Mount Shasta in 1875 (destroyed by lightning in 1905). Very Good plus, really quite close to near fine; the major flaw being the common one that circuit binding (yapp binding) was used, in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges, but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat (see scan). Early owner's signature at top of contents page. Otherwise, just occasional very small points of cover wear. A very handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy, contents fine. See scan of contents page for the lineup of stellar club writers and their always engaging and adventurous topics. In addition to the graphics mentioned above, this issue is chock full of photographic plates by the club's best photographers, as well as others. Six very early Ansel Adams shots headline those, but there are also one or more shots each by Walter L. Huber, Ansel E. Adams, Lee L. Stopple, Charles E. Townsend, J.N. LeConte, Robert L. Lipman, J.E. Haynes, Marion Randall Parsons, Fred Herz, E. L. Macaulay, Bayard H. Jones, C.O. Schneider, and several uncredited shutter artists. SC2.
