Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. While censorship has long been a reality for English teachers, the current censorship crisis represents a material change. This censorship is driven by politics, specifically Christian nationalism and related right-wing ideologies, and often is supported and upheld by local policies and statewide legislation. It is focused on large-scale book challenges, resulting in thousands of book bans a year. The current censorship trend also includes public condemnation of teachers and librarians through school board meetings and social media. This volume, the first of two, shares original research on the upsurge of censorship that has overtaken the English language arts classroom, beginning in 2020. The articles in this volume feature research that examines censorship from a variety of angles, and provide insight into: A national survey of English teachers that found that while a minority of teachers experienced direct censorship, a vast majority of teachers are concerned about potential censorship and make book selections based on that well-founded fear.Research based on interviews with middle-school teachers about their book selections, which found that while most feel well-prepared to select high-quality children's literature, they also feel constrained in their choices by both internal and external forces.Open-ended survey responses and storytelling to examine how teachers "worked around" restrictive curricular policies specific to the 1619 Project. The intersection of restrictive state legislation and policies, the reasons for book challenges, and the rhetoric around critical race theory and diversity, equity, and inclusion using critical policy analysis.Actions, steps, and policy strategies that teachers and administrators can use to prepare for and respond to book challenges.NCTE has long been an outspoken opponent of censorship. This support for books, reading, and teacher expertise continues through today via the Students' Right to Read, the Committee Against Censorship, and the Intellectual Freedom Award. In a time of increasing censorship and attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion, this series and this volume serve as timely tools for helping to navigate this challenging landscape. Paperback. Condición: New. Investigating Disciplinary Literacy provides practical, research-based guidance for teachers seeking to strengthen students' reading, writing, and communication skills in subjects from the humanities to the sciences. The authors present a framework for conducting professional development cycles based on disciplinary literacy-related learning and district-based research projects they have conducted over the past five years. The book outlines the steps in the cycle and identifies four "working habits" essential to initiating and sustaining disciplinary literacy projects: balancing content with process; creating a culture of adaptation and invention; attending equally to intermediate and subject-specific literacy skills; and positioning teachers and leaders as learners within projects. The book, written in a reader-friendly voice, shows how educators can collaboratively explore and implement disciplinary literacy-related practices in context-specific, meaningful ways.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Classrooms--where students, their families, and curricular expectations intersect with legislation, education policies, and community norms--have become the sites of censorship and attacks on students' right to read. Teachers are the professionals charged with weaving these competing forces into a coherent curriculum and supportive school experience. The Impacts of Censorship, Volume 2 offers research that centers teachers working in a climate of book challenges and bans, censorship, restrictive legislation, angry parents, and ideologues. With essays that incorporate research from Idaho, Iowa, New York, Massachusetts, and Texas, this volume presents a wide range of educational contexts for the study of censorship. It also features interviews with nine National Council of Teachers of English Intellectual Freedom Award winners, including authors Laurie Halse Anderson and Nic Stone.Readers of this volume will gain a deeper understanding of teachers' perspectives and will learn strategies for teaching diverse texts in the current climate and for advocating to keep diverse books in students' hands. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condición: New. Second Edition. A revised and expanded edition that promotes inquiry and teaching practices to help students gain the discipline-specific literacy skills they need to succeed in college, the workplace, and the society of tomorrow. In this second edition of Disciplinary Literacy Inquiry and Instruction, Jacy Ippolito, Christina L. Dobbs, and Megin Charner-Laird update their framework for guiding discipline-specific teaching and learning in K-12 classrooms. With new and revised chapters, the book outlines disciplinary literacy professional learning that not only supports the development of new instructional skills but also inspires hope, authentic engagement, and collaboration among teachers and educational teams. Ippolito, Dobbs, and Charner-Laird show how their adaptable framework, which is based on the RAND model of reading comprehension, allows educators across grade levels to embrace the language, genre, and modality of their particular subject areas while attuning specifically to texts, tasks, students, and classroom cultures. Offering research-based best practices, guiding questions, and concrete real-world examples, they prepare teachers to meet the demands of today's educational climate. This useful resource for professional learning demonstrates how the disciplinary literacy framework can guide both larger-scale and hyperlocal implementation. It maintains a special focus on critical disciplinary literacy work, which interweaves the ideas of disciplinary literacy with critical, culturally sustaining, and antiracist pedagogies. It also prepares educators to serve diverse student populations with specific literacy-learning needs, including neurodivergent students, deaf students, and multilingual learners. This book gives teachers and school leaders the tools to equip a more technically proficient, informed, and creative citizenry.…
