Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - T HE prediction of the probability of the safe passage of the fetus through the birth canal is the primary function of the attendant at the start of labor. The means of determining the relative size of the fetal head and the internal diameters of the pelvis have therefore been the objects of deep concern down through the centuries. Manual techniques of clinical evaluation of cephalo-pelvic relations reached their peak a generation or two ago. A massive nomenclature existed with respect to pelvic planes and diam eters. To these were related various positions, attitudes, stations, and synclitisms of the fetal head. Measurements depended on digital efforts to explore the interior and on dubious implications drawn from external pelvimetry. The mechanisms of labor, as it might occur under the innumerable possible pelvic measure ments and fetal orientations, were the subject of hours of stu dent drilling and remained a lifelong preoccupation of the most seasoned specialist. The increasing safety of cesarean section somewhat miti gated the consequences of error. When a borderline internal conjugate was digitally determined, a trial labor might be per mitted with the assurance that an ultimate solution was in reserve. Mistakes of two kinds persisted, however. On the one hand, trial labor might be permitted to continue too long and, with penicillin not yet discovered, a delayed cesarean section v vi Foreword could be perilous. Alternately, to be on the safe side, many un necessary elective sections might be carried out.

Añadir al carritoUniformly Bound Hardcovers. Condición: Very Good/Fine. John Singer Sargent, Aubrey Beardsley, Charles Conder, William Rothenstein, Walter Sickert, Philip Wilson Steer, et al. Ilustrador. First Editions. Thirteen volumes. 8vo. Profusely illustrated with over 200 plates. Original black-stamped yellow cloth. Bound without advertisements. Spine of Vol. I a tad dulled; front cover a touch rubbed; rear hinge of Vol. XII cracked. Withal, original cloth bright, in VG-Fine condition. First editions of all thirteen volumes of Beardsley's celebrated art-nouveau quarterly with plates after works by Beardsley, Sargent, Sickert, Rothenstein and may others. With literary contributions from luminaries such as W. B. Yeats, H. G. Wells, Henry James, Anatole France, Kenneth Grahame, et al.The renowned journal was conceived in 1894 by Beardsley and the American novelist Henry Harland, who explained: "In one of the densest and soupiest and yellowest of all London's infernalest fox, Beardsley and I sat together the whole afternoon . we thought it quite a pity that London publishers should fee themselves under any obligation to refuse any of our good manuscripts . and then and there we decided to have a magazine of our own and the next day we had an appointment with John Lane."What they had in mind was a literary journal that would attract attention for its content, format, and unique artistic vision. Beardsley, who served as the art director for the quarterly until his dismissal in 1895, due to his association with Oscar Wilde, was responsible for the cover designs for the first five volumes and, more importantly, for setting an aesthetic tone that touched on morbidity, eroticism, perversity and irony, The Yellow Book carried on until 1897, giving rise to a variety of artists and writers whose collective spirit gave rise to a cultural spirit that transcended Victoriana.A magnificent set.
