Description : Charles Spindler a vécu la Première Guerre mondiale depuis son hameau de Saint-Léonard, à une vingtaine de kilomètres à l'arrière du front situé sur les sommets vosgiens. Trop âgé pour être mobilisable, il passa les quatre années du conflit à écrire son Journal qui comprend 2600 feuillets manuscrits, grand format ! Un document inégalé qui constitue l'un des témoignages les plus exceptionnels sur un conflit déclenché officiellement pour récupérer l'Alsace et la Lorraine (Moselle), annexées par l'Allemagne à l'issue de la guerre de 1870. Ce témoignage est riche de détails sur la guerre vécue au front et sur la guerre subie à l'arrière, en Alsace, au jour le jour. Ce journal exprime aussi toute la complexité de la situation de l'Alsace : Français de coeur ("J'ai toujours ressenti Sedan comme une défaite"), Allemand de fait ("J'ai fait mon service militaire en Allemagne") rappelle Charles Spindler, qui a des neveux dans les deux camps !
