First Edition! Key presents his method of lateral lithotomy with a straight grooved staff and a single knife, as a refinement of Cheselden's operation. Dedicated to Sir Astley Cooper. The first plate is drawn by F. F. Giraud (1823) and engraved by J. Stewart. Key tried the instrument on a dead child before operating on a boy of about four to five years, in the presence of Travers, Green and Tyrrell. Charles Aston Key (1793-1849) was a pupil of Astley Cooper, surgeon at Guy's Hospital from 1824, lecturer in surgery there from 1825 to 1844, and surgeon to Prince Albert from 1847. His method was quickly discussed: a case report appeared in the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal in 1825, and Robert Hull's "On Lithotomy with Mr Key's Knife and Straight Staff" in 1827 (pp. 18-21). Lithotomy marks the beginning of open prostatic surgery, and Key's plate is reproduced in "History of the prostate, part three" (Trends in Urology & Men's Health, 2021). …
