El asesino desvelado, written by Enrique Amorim in 1944 and published in 1945 by Emece Editores, S.A. of Buenos Aires, is the thirteenth of a group of mystery stories, collected by Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares in El Septimo Circulo. Other authors whose stories appear in translation in this series are Nicholas Blake, John Dickson Carr, Michael Innes, Anthony Gilbert, James M. Cain, Anton Chejov, Milward Kennedy, Vera Caspary, Richard Hull and E. Phillpotts. Since the publication of El asesino desvelado, at least six other mystery novels have been published in El Septimo Circulo. Amorim takes his protagonist, the Argentine-Arab, escaped from war-torn France, through what he calls "laberintos de una mentalidad torturada" up to the unexpected solution of the mystery in Buenos Aires. The authors of this book have, with Amorim's full approval, adapted this mystery story so that it has become an elementary Spanish reader. They believe they have not destroyed any of the suspense of the original. All the words of this novel, in its simplified form, are found in the first four groups of Keniston's basic and useful words, or (unless they are easily recognized cognates) are fully translated and explained in footnotes and in the Frases Utiles at the beginning of each chapter. In the Frases Utiles, the student can find many new words "de actualidad" to enlarge his vocabulary. The footnotes also give some cultural information. The exercises stress the verbs listed in the columns under Repaso de verbos (with frequent keys to denote the irregularity). The other exercises consist of preguntas, applied principles of grammar, drills on the Frases Utiles, and translation from English into Spanish. The detailed Word Study is intended to show students that they can increase their passive vocabulary, and hence their reading skill, by forming habits of associating words -Spanish and English, and Spanish words in family groups. This text has more than nine hundred cognate words, approximately forty percent of the total vocabulary. All of these words should be easily recognized by their relationship to English words. The Word Study also lists fifty-eight "families" of Spanish words.
