Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Used/Christianity. Book is in good condition, with clean pages fred of wrinkles and tears. There is some underlining and notes on the side of some pages. Pages are yellowed slightly due to age. Synopsis: From Rockefeller and Fosdick s time until today, no single congregation in America has been more exposed in the pressures of social and political ferment than the Riverside Church in New York City. James Forman made his demands for black reparations there. Carl McIntire demonstrated on the sidewalk outside, the names of the Vietnam dead have been read in Christ Chapel. Ernest T. Campbell, senior minister of the church, tells in this book why he believes that evangelical Christianity, thrust unavoidably into the current American revolution, has resources not only to participate in the revolution, but the responsibility to shape and direct it. We are living in the time of Christian secularity, says the author. who believes that the church in the U.S. is in grave danger of coming apart on the question of whether the gospel is personal or social. Dr. Campbell takes the Bible seriously and criticizes church activists for their insensitivity to the vertical dimension of belief in Jesus Christ as a vital, saving presence in people s lives. On the other hand, he contends that evangelicals in this country have limited the gospel and hindered its acceptance by refusing to be concerned with political and social justice. He deals respectfully with the widely held position that the church receives no mandate from the New Testament to involve itself with such questions, and points out that this attitude rises in large part from a failure to take the Old Testament seriously. When a consideration of Christian ethics begins with questions like mixed bathing and dancing, he says, the Lordship of Christ is humiliated by caricature.…

Ships from the USA, quickly & w/care. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SYNOPSIS & HISTORY: Where Cross the Crowded Ways presents the pastoral prayers of Ernest Trice Campbell written and delivered during his tenure as senior minister of Riverside Church in New York City. Divided into distinct movements of thanksgiving, intercession, and petition, the prayers address the immediate human struggles of modern metropolitan life and engage directly with the social, ethical, and spiritual concerns of the early 1970s, including civil rights, urban poverty, and the responsibilities of the church in contemporary society. Campbell served as senior minister of Riverside Church from 1968 to 1976, succeeding Harry Emerson Fosdick and Robert J. McCracken, and was regarded as one of the most articulate voices of progressive Protestant preaching in his generation. The 1973 publication was issued by Association Press, the official publishing house of the National Council of the YMCA, which distributed ecumenical theology and social justice texts throughout the mid-twentieth century. The title derives from Frank Mason North's 1903 Social Gospel hymn. The half-title page carries the ownership signature of Dallas Stallings Jr., a Southern Baptist minister who served as pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke, Virginia, during the period of this book's publication. Collected in the fields of Social Gospel theology, progressive pastoral prayer, and twentieth-century Protestant homiletics.…

Campbell, a renowned American Presbyterian clergyman and theologian who served as the senior minister of the historic Riverside Church in New York City. Spanning 180 pages, this spiritual paperback explores the self-imposed psychological and spiritual boundaries that limit human potential and faith. The Core Premise & Title Origins The book's title is inspired by a story from German writer Hans Sachs about a young man who suffered from a deep-seated phobia of open doors, insisting that every door in his home remain locked to feel secure. Out of frustration, his older brother famously remarked, "One day I will lock you up in a room with all the doors open." Dr. Campbell uses this profound irony as a central metaphor for the human condition. He argues that while people are sometimes genuinely trapped by external constraints ("shut doors"), they are far more frequently paralyzed by their own inner anxieties. Even when God or circumstance provides open opportunities, people construct imaginary walls that prevent them from stepping forward. Key Themes & Chapter Focus Areas The Anatomy of Fear: Deconstructing the emotional blocks that trap people, such as the fear of the new, standard worry, and anxiety regarding the unknown. Spiritual Self-Imprisonment: Exploring how individuals choose the comfortable safety of a familiar "room" over the vulnerability required to walk through an open doorway of spiritual growth. Urban Ministry Insights: Weaving in prophetic pastoral perspectives and practical guidance rooted in his time leading a highly diverse, politically active metropolitan congregation in Manhattan.…
