The field of alphanumeric displays covers appli cations from the single character lift indicator to the thousand-plus char…acter computer read out. A survey of the state of alphanumeric displays helps the user of display devices to make a choice, for a particular application, between the various devices available now or in the near future. It is essential to consider the circuits and the display device together in order to obtain a clear picture of the economics of the different techniques. In general, a display module is controlled by binary input signals at normal logic pow ers and may be subdivided into five basic elements: 1) data memory, 2) character generator, 3) driving circuits, 4) scanning circuits, and 5) display device. The data memory is essential to make the display module independent of the system. Normally, this will be an electronic memory, but in some cases, the display device will have an inherent memory. The character generator must perform two functions: 1) convert the binary code to a 'lout of n' form to select the chosen character out of the on' available, and 2) create the character format, although in some cases this is inherent in the display device.

Camatini, Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Leading world experts in the field were invited…to attend this Institute and to lecture on the heat pump and its potential applications in the broader context of energy conservation. The lectures focussed on today's energy problems, fundamental principles of thermodynamics and their application to the heat pump, potential heat sourc es for heat pumps, alternate heat pump drives, heat transport and special applications in some areas where considerable savings could be obtained. When the Institute was planned, publication of the lectures in the form of a book was not envisaged. It was felt, however, during a round-table discussion with the lecturers that there was a definite need for publication of the lectures presented, since a comprehensive scientific Itechnical book on the heat pump seemingly did not exist. The resulting volume might not provide the reader with a full picture of the heat pump in the sense that the technical design of individual components and existing large installations of heat pumps are not addres sed in detail.

Brigadier General Leo A.Kiley, Commander, Office of Aerospace Research, USAF, in his remarks before the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers at the opening ceremony of the Seminar on Holography held at San Francisco, California, in May 1968, declared, 'It has been said that in the twenty-first century at least half of the jobs that will exist then do not exist today. But be that as it may, I am sure that holography will be common place. ' And later 'Even in its embryonic state today, the concept of holography is providing real world applications to the scientific community and I feel that continued rapid growth can be predicted.' Now, only three years after these statements, the development of holography is extraordinary on the scientific side and very promising from the point of view of proven and potential applica tions. Holography looks like an emerging technique, a valuable tool for engineers.
