Die Herausgeberinnen und Herausgeber von Krieg in der Geschichte sind methodologisch der neuen und kritischen Militärgeschichte verbunden, wie sie sich seit den 1990er Jahren auch im deutschsprachigen Raum entwickelt hat. Insbesondere von der Erweiterung um sozial-, alltags-, kultur-, mentalitäts- und geschlechterhistorische Perspektiven hat die Kriegs- und Militärgeschichte viel profitiert. Die Reihe sieht es als ihre Aufgabe, die enge Verknüpfung von Militär und Gesellschaft sichtbar zu machen und aufzuzeigen, wie die historisch unterschiedlichen militärischen Verbände in die zivile Gesellschaft eingebettet sind und von ihr geformt werden, umgekehrt auch in diese Gesellschaft stark normierend und reglementierend eingreifen.
