First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title, "Lord Lonsdale from Lord Burghersh", and with a short errata list in the author's hand. The recipient was Burghersh's uncle, William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757-1844). Fane (1784-1859) was Wellington's sometime aide-de-camp, serving at the battles of Talavera and Busaco, and in the retreat to Torres Vedras. In 1813 he was accredited military commissioner to the allied headquarters and was present during the 1814 campaign in France until the capture of Paris, an account of which he gives in this volume. Provenance: Hugh Cecil Lowther (1857-1944), 5th Earl of Lonsdale, with his name gilt-stamped on the boards and his imposing armorial bookplate. Hugh Cecil was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry in 1897 and in the Second Boer War was assistant adjutant-general for the Imperial Yeomanry. But he is best known as a sportsman, commonly called "England's greatest sporting gentleman".
