Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Poor-Fair. 2nd 'impression' corrected & enl. Blind-stamped leather. Although the contents are complete (inc.list facing t.p. of a dozen names approving this 'reprinting', and, bar a small hole (3 cm x 0.8 cm) in final leave, in excellent of reasonable condition (bar ragged edges to some end leaves and occ. tanning), this copy is rather wrecked, the textblock being split into 3, plus the disbinding of 3 finals leaves and the binding broken accordingly with both covers detached, spine very chipped towards lower end and all corner seriously rubbed, in its favour it is not ex-library and has a small early name label verso fr.over 'Stuart Moore'. Contents complete but I baulk at listing pagination (though will try on request). Weighs over 2.6 kilos so non-UK sales will be somewhat problematic for me to arrange and additional postage obviously required for UK ones. Given that the faults are structural rather than text markings etc. this is an ideal candidate for a keen book-binder to exercise their skills on. Of 3 copies listed on Abebooks, the two non-ex-lib.ones are £700+ and over a £1,000 (in Germany), for fuller descriptions of contents etc. consult one of these. Originally published in 1657. Very heavy so serious additional postage will be required.

Añadir al carritoBlack and white front endpaper map of Mongolia. Black/white photographic frontispiece and further illustrations of photographs taken by the author throughout the text. Blue cloth covered boards are severely discoloured, some light scattered foxing mainly to the upper margins and edges, still a good firm copy of a scarce title.18.5 x 12cm. "Mrs Gull (Mrs. Bulstrode as she then was) had the fortune, not to mention the pluck, to be in Urga at a time when history was being made for Mongolia. I well remember the perturbation in British official circles in Peking when this adventurous lady, at a time when the Chinese were fighting the Mongols, sought a passport to take her through the opposing lines, and so to the desired destination. Needless to say the passport was not forthcoming, whereupon Mrs. Gull, without papers, went off by herself, and succeeded in making a considerable journey which brought her perilously close to the unsettled region in which guerilla warfare was proceeding. Her experiences in Inner Mongolia made it plain that getting through to Urga meant a detour so long, expensive, and risky as not to be worth while. Accordingly, she and her sporting companion, Mr. E. M. Gull, a fire-eater in the pursuit of political developments, went round the back way by train and reached Urga from Siberia, no small adventure, considering the state of Mongolia at the time. What they saw Mrs. Gull describes in her own taking manner, and I need not say more about her book than that it is full of enlightenment as regards the character of both people and country." (From the introduction by David Fraser 'Times' correspondent in Peking).

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. The first edition of the third part of Bulstrode's reports. Bound in fine modern 3/4 leather over marbled boards. Fine binding and cover. Collated. [20], 341, [1], index [24] pp. License laid on rear pastedown. Generally clean, and unmarked. Light foxing. Scarce, stray, early marginalia. Wing B5448. ESTC R226767. A view of 17th century English common law. Dean's Memo and Brown's Bibliography list the second edition of this text was in John Marshall's law notes. An interesting excerpt, "The poorest person living, were not the Law his refuge, would be yet more unhappy then his present condition can make him, for be he never so mean he is within its care, and the greatest Person living is not exempted from its Power" And, "But is is not a licentious Liberty which the Law gives us, but a real Freedom, a freedom from Slavery and Tyranny." (Speaking of the Liberties of England, referencing Lord Coke.) Bulstrode draws deeply from the Western legal tradition, citing Justinian's code, Coke, Hooker, Aristotle, the Magna Carta, Roman law, etc. Much of the legal basis of law he presents is familiar to modern English and American jurists, and political philosophers. Edward Bulstrode (c.1588-1659) was a noted English jurist. During the 1620s-1630s, he served on the courts of chancery, king's bench, and Star Chamber. Bulstrode's best know work was his law reports, 'covering king's bench suits in 1610 17, and 1625 6, as well as some poor-law assizes cases from the early years of Charles I. These were translated by Bulstrode from his original law-French notes into English, the first reports to have been so published by their author." - Wilfrid Prest, Bulstrode, Edward (c.1588-1659), Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004.

Añadir al carritoThe second Jmpression carefully corrected; with the Addition of Thousands of References never before printed. Folio. (1:) Titelblatt, (16), 223, (36) S.; (2:) Titelblatt, (16), 358, (32) S.; (3:) Titelblatt, (18), 341, (22) S. Zeitgemäßer Halblederband mit Buntpapierüberzug auf den Buchdeckeln. The author took his reports in French, and translated them into English for publication. It appears that he had a part of his manuscript published, selecting, as he says, "the fittest and choicest cases out of those reports which I have with no small care, labor and pains, collected together". The prefaces to the parts, or rather dedications, are curiosities in point of language and character of composition, eminently characteristic of the English style of writing in the early part of the seventeenth century. In this respect Bulstrode appears to have attempted to rival "that Leviathan of the Law" Lord Coke. Among others the reports have the imprimatur of Lord Hale, as follows- "I have perused divers cases in these reports, and I Think they are fit to be published." - Matthew Hale. There is a chasm in the pagination of the second part of the reports, but the book is perfect. (Marvin 158-159).
