How do museum practitioners in Africa overcome the colonial heritage of their institutions? Which significance do diasporic objects and the prospect of restitution have? These global relations also left their traces in the Kunstverein in Bremen. Many works which were a…cquired by the museum during the colonial period reflect stereotypes of the foreign and exotic.The authors trace these colonial blind spots in the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen. They examine the history of the Kunstverein in Bremen within the context of the city's trade and global connections and investigate the colonial implications of works by, amongst others, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde and Fritz Behn. These European perspectives are set in dialogue with works by modern and contemporary artists from the African and Asian continent. Thus, the book not only enables a postcolonial perspective on the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen, but also on early modern art in general.Funded by the Program Fellowship International Museum of LOGO.

Viele der Werke, die während der Kolonialzeit in das Museum gelangten, thematisieren… damalige Klischees des Fremden und Exotischen.Die Autorinnen gehen den kolonialen Spuren in der Sammlung der Kunsthalle Bremen nach. Dabei verbinden sie zum einen die Geschichte des Hauses mit der globalen Handelsgeschichte, zum anderen zeigen sie, welche Rassismen und Exotismen Kunstwerken z. B. von Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde oder Fritz Behn innewohnen. Die europäischen Perspektiven der damaligen Zeit werden mit außereuropäischen, darunter auch zeitgenössischen Positionen der Kunst in Dialog gesetzt.So ermöglicht das Buch eine postkoloniale Perspektive nicht nur auf die Sammlung der Kunsthalle Bremen, sondern auch auf die Kunst der Moderne.
