A beautiful composition, from Perry's ''The Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan: performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854.'', based on the daguerrotype by Eliphalet Brown. The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879.

Brown, Arthur Willliam Ilustrador. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - ''The Open Door'' is a gripping mystery romance novel written by Earle Ashley Walcott in 1905. The story follows the life of a young woman named Margaret, who inherits a large estate from her late father. As she begins to explore the property, she discovers a mysterious door that leads to a hidden room. Margaret becomes obsessed with uncovering the secrets behind the door and the room, but she soon realizes that there are dark forces at work that are determined to keep the truth hidden. Along the way, Margaret falls in love with a charming and mysterious stranger, and together they embark on a dangerous journey to unravel the secrets of the estate. The novel is filled with suspense, romance, and intrigue, and it will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. ''The Open Door'' is a timeless classic that has captivated readers for over a century, and it continues to be a beloved work of literature today.1910. One of the principal threads of Mr. Walcott's clever story, The Open Door, corresponds remarkably with the theft, and remarkable recovery of a famous painting by Millet, valued at ten thousand dollars, from a museum in San Francisco. The scene of the novel is also set in San Francisco, but since the manuscript was submitted well before the theft, Mr. Walcott cannot be accused of imitating the facts. This is a really good detective story; goodness in the case of a detective story denoting a striking plot, a baffling mystery and interest that grows more intense with each succeeding chapter.
