A view from "from Nature" by Wilhelm Heine, with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the… Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Madeira was the first stop for Perry's expedition after embarking on his first visit to Japan: the squadron appearing as dots on the distant harbour. There they re-fuelled and re-provisioned, this serene and charming scene captured by the Wiliam Heine the expedition's artist. Perry's squadron is depicted at anchor in the background.

Tinted lithograph 21.8 x 15.4 cm, 28.9 x 21.7 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, one corner stained, but the image in very good condition. A view of the famous Whampoa pagoda rendered on the spot ("From nature") by William Heine with figures from a daguerrotype by Eliphalet Bronwn, prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of… the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Perry visited Whampoa on the Canton river in 1853, and his narrative noted in addition to the pagoda's religious significance, "its usefulness as a land mark by foreign vessels for they steer and anchor by its bearings.".

Tinted lithograph with original hand colour 22.5 x 16 cm, 28.9 x 22.2 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, one corner creased and another with a small paper fault, but in very good condition. A fine cameo portrait of Buddhist Priest from a temple in Simoda (Shimoda) on the southeastern Izu peninsula, after a daguerrotype by Eli…phalet Brown, and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.

Tinted lithograph, 16.2 x 23. 8 cm; 21.6 x 29 cm (sheet), some age toning, lower corner with a small stain, bottom margin ragged and trimmed, but the image in very good condition. A beautiful composition, from Perry's ''The Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan: performed in the years 18…52, 1853, and 1854.'', based on the daguerrotype by Eliphalet Brown. The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879.

Heine and Brown, the artists, may be seen conferring in the middle ground of one view.The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879. Perry's Narrative goes into considerable detail about these views: ?Picturesque crags studded the hillside?Over it towered a tall crag, rent through the centre and surmounted with a square rock, like a ruined tower [and] on a spot commanding a fine view of the bay, [we] found a handsome Cunq-qua, in an enclosure planted with trees. A dignitary of some kind welcomed us, and we were plied with small cups of excellent tea?.
