Stately view by Wilhelm Heine prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan." recording a diplomatic moment with far-reaching consequences. Perry's expedition (1852-4) had been given the task (as outlined in President's letter) of establishing diplomatic and trade relations with Japan, effectively beginning a process of "opening" Japan to the West.…

Pair of full-length portraits of official court interpreters from daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown, and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". The interpreters were representatives of the Tokugawa Shogunate.…
