Coloured lithograph 21.8 x 35.3cms; 29 x 43.6cms (sheet), marginal toning with a couple of minor chips and spotting, original folds, but the image clean and unmarred in very good condition. Lithograph after a Japanese woodblock prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas…and Japan.". In March 1854 Perry had won the access to the Japanese ports of Shimoda and Hakodate for American vessels, with the signing of the Kanagawa Treaty, effectively beginning a process of opening Japan to the West.

Tinted lithograph 15.1 x 22.8 cm, 22.3 x 28.5 cm (sheet), edges a little discoloure and creased, but the image in very good condition. Stately view by Wilhelm Heine prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan." recording a diplomatic moment with far-reaching con…sequences. Perry's expedition (1852-4) had been given the task (as outlined in President's letter) of establishing diplomatic and trade relations with Japan, effectively beginning a process of "opening" Japan to the West.

Tinted lithographs 22.7 x 15.1 cm, 28.8 x 22.5 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, small stain to one of the lower margins, inner edge of one and outer of the other ragged, but the images in very good condition. Pair of full-length portraits of official court interpreters from daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown, and prepared for… Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". The interpreters were representatives of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
