Lithograph after a Japanese woodblock prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas…and Japan.". In March 1854 Perry had won the access to the Japanese ports of Shimoda and Hakodate for American vessels, with the signing of the Kanagawa Treaty, effectively beginning a process of opening Japan to the West.

Stately view by Wilhelm Heine prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan." recording a diplomatic moment with far-reaching con…sequences. Perry's expedition (1852-4) had been given the task (as outlined in President's letter) of establishing diplomatic and trade relations with Japan, effectively beginning a process of "opening" Japan to the West.
